Audi TT air con query

Just treated myself to an 02-reg TT 1.8T Quattro coupe and overall I'm incredibly happy with it. 
Only thing that I'm unhappy with is the air con, in that it seems totally crap. I'm wondering if it needs an air con service or whether this is as good as it gets. My previous baby was a Mini Cooper S which had an air con system which basically turned the car into a fridge ~ very pleasant on our occasional warm days. Not so with the TT ~ when I turn the temp down beyond about 17 or 18 degrees (can't remember which) it just says Lo, and although the blowers then go into overdrive, the net result doesn't seem to be the interior refrigeration I was so happy with in the MCS. In fact, over the weekend, it was mainly warmer inside the car than out!
Am I doing something wrong? Or expecting too much? Or is the system just in need of some TLC?
