My 1.9tdi Touran has developed a crunch on 2nd gear, its only done 20K miles and all other gear changes are fine.

Anyone else seen this? any idea what it is?

Could be clutch related, best to go down the dealers because it's under warranty

If it was clutch would be the same for all gears.

Sounds like, your 2nd gear syncro has failed.

I take it you do a lot of town driving, short journeys, lots of 1st to 2nd gear changes??

Fix is a Gearbox rebuild.

If its out of warranty and you have full main dealer service history, the phase you need to use is, what about good will??

took straight to the stealers ( only round the corner ) and its booked in for next week.

They suggested that it could be the syncro? but I've been on the recieving end of more than enough dealer BS in my life to ask around a bit too.

If its the clutch then I guess I'll have to fight them for the warranty part cos they'll almost certainly claim wear and tear!

My T5 transporter crunches when i put it into 4th due to a lack of gearbox oil in when i bought it. The person i bought it of had a new clutch and halfshaft done and did about 30 miles in it before i bought it then the next day i did a 250 mile drive towing a car and the gearbox was making a terible noise. I was told it needed 3 lts of 75/90 oil from empty./ I put 2 lts in so it was very low. Now everytime i put it in 4th it crunches but all the other gears are ok. Ive been told its the syncromesh in mine !frown

Hmm, my wife's Touran has just started doing this. I thought it was my driving (!) but maybe not.

It'll be 3 years old in Oct, so time to get it into the VW garage I think...

This is a known fault, there was a recall a few weeks back to drain and re-fill the gearbox oil with a new mineral oil. If this doesnt cure, a new gearbox will be fitted under warranty

you wouldnt recieve a notice as its technically a workshp action not a safety recall

"There will be no active customer notification. Make sure all affected vehicles are checked and repaired as part of a workshop visit."

I had the same problem today. Was popping out of 2nd gear and crunching.
Took it straight to local clutch specialist.
Do i stand any chance if i take it to vw and mention that recall?
