golf mk 3 1.4 tappet noise

Hi everyone,
I have today gone out and bought a 1997 Golf 1.4 for a runabout.
I had a good look round it, went out in it etc., and it looks good and drives well, and is a two owner car with 53k miles on the clock.
However, it has what sounds like a noisy tappet which was still noisy when the engine was warm.
I decided to go into it with eyes wide open. It hasn't got a brilliant service history, and is well overdue for a service, so I plan first to flush it and put some new oil in it, hoping that it improves. Does this sound feasible, or is there anything else that it could be that is making the noise?
I paid what I think is a fairly low price so I don't mind spending a bit of money on it to get it sorted.
