A4 2.0TDi engines - are they good?
Discussion
Looking at A4 avants with the 2.0tdi (140bhp) engine. Within my budget, the engines have between 80-100k on them. Is this anything to worry about?
Also i have a reset bluefin unit and as going to remap the engine, would this be ok given the mile the engine has done?
Thanks for the help!

Injector seals (loss of fuel pressure, hi rpm misfire)
Tandem pumps (engine oil gets into fuel + hi rpm misfire)
Injectors (rough running)
Porous heads (coolant loss with no outward leak)
EGR Coolers (coolant loss with no outward leak)
EGR valves (rough running + massive smoke intermittently)
Oil pump drive chain (sudden loss of oil pressure, destroys turbo + engine damage posible)
Turbos (vains stick causing over boost, or bearing failure from above oil pressure loss)
Oh and the dual mas flywheels can exploded and the clutches tend to judder, A parts from that, its all good.
Dipstick are black, dead handy when reading oil level in a diesel (which even straight after a change is always black)

Is it just the PD diesels that are this unreliable?Tandem pumps (engine oil gets into fuel + hi rpm misfire)

All engines have their problems and the 2.0 TDI - considering the hundreds of thousands of cars with this donk fitted - seems to be generally reliable if correctly serviced.
We see far fewer problems with these than we ever did with the old generation engines, 2.5 in particular.
If you're looking to spend £10k however you'll probably get a better car in the BMW - with the new model A6 that will put you at the very bottom end. I'd spend £14k to give you a better choice of cars, you'll really want full leather and DVD Nav also.

Im maxed out at £10k tbh. Seen nice 525d and 530d tourers, but have between 100k-120k on the clock, and are 4 year old cars. Is this something to worry about? We see far fewer problems with these than we ever did with the old generation engines, 2.5 in particular.

The 2.5 it just a dog stay away.
The 2.0TDI, is starting to give us a good few problems now, we get one a week or so with one of the common faults I listed, however Dr G made a good point, There are hundreds of thousands of these engines out there in every thing VAG, so for every one or two I see playing up, there are another 1000 or so going strong. It is difficult to put this in perspective when you work on cars for a living, I only see them when they are broken. And it does seems to be the same things that brake.
The 1.9PD engine seems bullet proof, but are very unrefined and noisy, they dont suffer half of the problems the very similar 2.0 does.
The 2.0 common rail engines are too new to tell, we had a couple blow up when B8 A4 was launched the very first cars, and no probs since.
Regarding the best engine in an A6 for £10k, got to be the 2.7 for me. I had a look and you can get them for that money.

for 10k you could have my 320d (163bhp) new shape touring, although probably not big enough for you
will 2 rhodesian ridgebacks fit in the boot! That sort of mileage on an A6 wouldn't really be an issue, we've sold a couple with over 100 on and decent history - given us no bother at all.
