Hey guys and gals!

I've got another query about my car. The Audi section has been helpful before, so here we go again! smile

When changing from 2nd to 3rd under hard acceleration, I've noticed that (occasionally) 3rd gear will "bog down", retarding acceleration, much like when the traction control would. Only the traction control light doesn't blink at me.

Is this merely the 4WD system retarding things under full load, the traction control actually kicking in, or even a problem with the car?
Have any other owners experienced this sensation? Any input would greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Darren

Could be first stages of the clutch going, could be the MAF playing up.

Mine occasionally does it, and it's related to the MAF starting to go from what I understand. Which is a relief compared to the cost of a clutch.

I'm 99% sure thats caused by the way you come off the clutch.

The car knows the position of the clutch pedal, and its dulling the engine performance for a second to stop you blowing up the clutch and flywheel. I have notice it on a number of B7 RS4's and the 3.0TDI A5's do it too (only on full trottle acceleration straight after a gear change).

I always put it down to me being to girly with the clutch, almost slipping it. Makes sense you get it as you change up to 3rd as its a longer cross gate shift, as apposed to the straight down 1st to 2nd. Trying playing with how you drop the clutch in and see if you can make it happen, then change how you do it to make sure it doesn't.

Interesting, thanks tt.

I have a modded S3 - would that be a similar thing, so substantially more power than stock? As you mention it only really happens on second to third. And only on full throttle gearchanges

Current S3 probably yes, old shape S3 I dont think it had clutch position sensor, so probably not.

Thanks for the reply, guys! smile

TT, you're describing exactly what's happening, under those conditions. I'll try backing off and see if that's fine.

The car was only given a diagnostic check a month ago while it was at my main dealer. It will be going back for an MOT next week, so will get them to check then.

Contango: You advise against internet speculation, however I like to ask, so I may be able to get an idea of the potential problems, and head off the to dealer with some idea of what I'm talking about smile
Thanks again guys.

Sorry for the internet speculation comment, no malice involved.....purely based on my own experience of multiple suggestions from those who are nowhere near the car,,,where as a system diagnosis can potentially pinpoint a problem,
that will teach me to proffer advice on an internet forum from my past Audi experience!. Hope you resolve the problem with your car.

No worries. I didn't read your comment from a malicious point of view smile
As mentioned, I like to get a idea of potential problems - it really does help when I trundle off to the dealer thumbup

turn ESP off

mine did this on 1-2 and 2-3 and it was the ESP preventing all 4 wheels spinning when you come back fully on the power

Does the car have enough torque to spin all 4 wheels on the 2nd-3rd change, even in the wet never mind the dry :/
