My van is currently out of action so using the golf to get to work. Now normaly I would not worry about this but since I will be doing a fair few miles whilst the van is being fixed I thought id ask here. So anyways onto the problem:
When reversing I get a clicking noise its been there since I brought the car 2 months ago but have not worried about it till now as I had not been using it.
Also whilst driving there is a slight almost knocking sound and you can feel it on the passenger floor a lot and also a bit on the drivers floor.
My worry is gearbox but it still feels realy realy tight and does not pop out of any gears whilst driving.
It has has a new clutch not more than 5 months ago so not that.
Any thoughts I dont wont to take it to a garage just yet unless I have to.

The knocking could be a CV joint on it's way out.
It too me AGES to trace an inner one on my wife's Mk1 Golf, as it was completely intermittent. Jack the car up & give both drive shafts a good shake & see if there is any play in either end.....
The clicking could be something as minor as a zip tie on a CV boot catching.
I'd get the knocking looked into before worrying about the clicking !

If its only when reversing then it is the damaged revers gear inside the box. One of our parts boys has a MK2 GTI and his does it too. Just be gentle with it when reversing and it should be fine for years.
His one has over 150k on it and he's the type to revers at full throttle for the best car park J turns. And his is still going strong despite the noise.
If it fails completely you will have no revers gear and need the gearbox rebuilt by a specialist. Repair would cost more than the car is worth probably.
