Can I pick your brains please?

I've just picked up a 55 plate Passat TDI sport saloon with the standard sports suspension at 17" 5 spoke alloys on 235/45/17 tyres (Contintal on the back, Hero?? on the front)

I've noticed a rumbling noise that only seems to happen around 40mph, doesn't happen below 35 or above 45. It sounds like a cross between a knackered wheel bearing (although can't be as it would do it all the time?) and a window left open.

Went to the VW Main Stealer in Bristol who said its just tyre noise - but please book it in for a whole day and we'll check it out for other non-related problems we can charge you for (he didn't actually say that, but thats what they do! smile)

Just wanted to check if anyone else has experienced this and if there is a fix? tyres have plenty of tread on them and brake pads look fine -only got 45k on it so wouldn't expect anything major.

Any thoughts gratefully recevied!
Matt

Hi,

Had the same sort of noise on the wife's old 2005 Leon FR+ Tdi (previous generation). It was on 225/45 R17 Pirelli P6000's and I took it to the dealer 4 times (whilst still under warranty) over a noise like a wheel bearing that happend at approx 40mph. They insisted it was tyre noise but I didn't believe them until The front tyres were replaced at 18000 (with P6000's) and the noise disappeared !

Hope this helps.

Thanks Resin Rocket - been trawling through the old posts on here and seems to be a fairly common problem - so will swap the conti's onto the front and see if that makes any difference
