Help - New Passat Sport Owner - Rumble noise at 40mph??
Discussion
Can I pick your brains please?
I've just picked up a 55 plate Passat TDI sport saloon with the standard sports suspension at 17" 5 spoke alloys on 235/45/17 tyres (Contintal on the back, Hero?? on the front)
I've noticed a rumbling noise that only seems to happen around 40mph, doesn't happen below 35 or above 45. It sounds like a cross between a knackered wheel bearing (although can't be as it would do it all the time?) and a window left open.
Went to the VW Main Stealer in Bristol who said its just tyre noise - but please book it in for a whole day and we'll check it out for other non-related problems we can charge you for (he didn't actually say that, but thats what they do! )
Just wanted to check if anyone else has experienced this and if there is a fix? tyres have plenty of tread on them and brake pads look fine -only got 45k on it so wouldn't expect anything major.
Any thoughts gratefully recevied!

Hi,
Had the same sort of noise on the wife's old 2005 Leon FR+ Tdi (previous generation). It was on 225/45 R17 Pirelli P6000's and I took it to the dealer 4 times (whilst still under warranty) over a noise like a wheel bearing that happend at approx 40mph. They insisted it was tyre noise but I didn't believe them until The front tyres were replaced at 18000 (with P6000's) and the noise disappeared !
Hope this helps.
