Im thinking of chaning my 530d soon.

Its a toss up between a TT and a 330ci sport.

How do these cars compare

and are TT`s reliable? also are there any problem areas which I need to pay particular attention to when buying?

We've had this thread and this comparison quite recently IIRC wink

Maintained and serviced correctly the worst you'll likely see is a popped coil pack or a failed clutch slave once there are some miles on it. Neither particularly expensive.

330 is the better steer than the dynamically plain-jane (if competent) TT but the little coupe is the cooler, classier and more distinctive of the two by a yard arm.

TTS is a fine car. Email me if you want to save £12k on a 8week old one.

I need back seats!

Actually you raise a very good point, have no idea how old the cars you're looking at are!

Sorry I should have mentioned it,

Looking to spend about £5 to £5.5k, and only want the 225.

Ill probably be looking at a 2001 with about 90,000 miles

If at all possible I would say spend a bit more than that.

You'll be hard pressed to find something with a correct history for that money and you cannot scrimp on these cars.

I have an S3 from 01 so roughly the same car with a different body

Serviced every 6,000 miles, no oil sludge or anything like that.

But, I did need to get the cam chain tensioner replaced for a decent whack of cash, but that is neither common nor uncommon. it just happens to some.

Bushes need replacing but that's cheap. Overall pretty good car. Mines putting out close to 260hp now, and will be pumped up to 300hp in about a month without breaking a sweat.

TT's are known for electrical issues. I bought a 2003 TT in 2005 with 22k miles, sold it in April 2008. It had 45,000 miles on the clock at point of sale.

The issues:-

- CV gaitor split twice on the same corner - cost £50 to replace each time
- CD changer stopped working; even though its a bose sound system, the changers are actually panasonic. It had ot be refurbs. £80 (normally over £100).
- Grinding sounds when turn at point of sale - no idea what it was.
- Brake llights stop working when on holiday; wiring issue. Quick fix at garage £50.

I serviced it twice and had oil changes every 6 month. Most costly job was the tyres at £125 a corner.

Its a lovely car - really enjoyed it. Miss it a lot!

Replaced it with the S2000 which i will sell as it does not give the joy of the TT.

The 330 will cost you more to run in terms of petrol. My 225 did 32mpg on the motorway. Averaged about 28-31mpg... cant remember totally what the number were. approx average of 30mpg.

Bose is merely a speaker upgrade and doesn't change the stereo or changer components.

Yes, it's an amp plus speaker upgrade. The headunits tend to be either Panasonic, Grundig or Blaupunkt.
