I recently had a front CV joint replaced - but its just failed the MOT on the gaiter being 'insecure'.
As the CV joint was fitted as a bit of a favour by a family member I can't really go back and kick his arse, but speaking to the local garage they say the CV boot is a fairly rigid affair so cableties are no good to hold it on - the garage guy suggested replacing the entire boot for a conventional soft rubber one, as he said now the original clip has been cut off you won't get anything to hold it satisfactorily, it will keep coming off.

My question - would you replace the CV boot? (By the way Audi wanted £175 to do this).
Or is there some type of clip that will hold the original boot on?

Is it a very difficult job? (I'm assuming with Audi wanting £175 it is).
I'm OK with dismantling the suspension if its straightforward with no major surprises - I've got a ball joint splitter etc if I need one.

Cheers

Hmm.... You should be able to pop the boot back on assuming its not damaged... and then use the correct tool to fit a proper metal strap back inplace... that should hold it..

If the boot is damaged, then replace it with a new softer one.....

Dont get audii to do it.. find an independant or do it yourself!

The guy at the garage said its almost impossible to get the rigid plasic boots to stay on even with a fiting tool - the original steel bands are fitted in the factory.

I've been looking at replacing the boot with a rubber one - I've seen stretch ones that use a cone to get it over the CV joint without remnoving it from the driveshaft - anybody know if these are any good?
