Hi all,

A friend is considering using Jabbasport to remap his 2002 Audi A3 1.8T Sport from 150 bhp to circa 206 bhp.

I understand Jabbasport are highly regarded in this field but can anyone comment on whether a 35% power increase is too much for the engine without upgrading the turbo/intercooler system?

I'm pretty sure the engine doesn't come with an intercooler as standard but does have low mileage and is regularly serviced.

Thanks in advance!

Simon

It's quite a lot to ask from the little turbo on these but a very popular upgrade. A properly driven and maintained car shouldn't need anything further than an uprated diverter valve (circa 85 quid) to cope.

Of course, as with any turbocharged car remember it needs to warm up and cool down before and after spirited use.

Thanks for your reply.

After some more research I might suggest lowering the power to say 180-190 bhp (which is only a little more than the Skoda vRS which uses the same eninge and gearbox).

Will decreasing the bhp enable a tuning company to increase the car's torque?

Thanks!

i had a remapped 1.8T in an A6, its not all the top end power your interested for speed/ drivability its the torque delivery. Look at the graphs if they will give you one as to how the power is delivered. Earlier torque will make it quicker even if its the same value. Thats the real advantage with a remap on one of these imho. Less gear changes, pulls much more eagrely from lower down and as a result will give you better economy if your on a trundle./ run as well as a better turn of speed.

Agree on the DV, popular upgrade is for an OEM DV from the TT 225. And the other weaker area is the N75 boost control solenoid, you can upgrade these to the N75J with a bit of faffing. Again this isnt an expensive upgrade, smoothes out the power delivery both made a difference to the car.

A good, safe remap we do on these give 35bhp/70nm torque as said previously, it's the lower revs that make them much more driveable and can be better on fuel as well due to the extra torque making better use of a higher gear..

I had my previous car mapped at Jabbersport. Those 1.8T engines can really take it with no problems at all. Trust me! It was a 150bhp rated engine, and dynoed at 228bhp when they were done (but it also dynoed a bit more than 150bhp to begin with. Some just do..). And it was 100% reliable for years after it was mapped.
Go for it. Those guys know what they are doing..

Is it the K03 or the K03s?

id say get a forge re-cir valve. (007 i think) and a forge tip. to make sure its always boosting properly.

all maps are different. iv driven a few mk4's with different maps. custom code was far too aggressive. apr was very smooth. i preferred the latter

P,
Your car would have been 180bhp as standard running a KO3S turbo. The 150bhp model runs the KO3 turbo that that wont break 200bhp when mapped. Places will say it will, but its rubbish.

The Jabba maps are quite aggressive and make a load of power low down to make the car feel quicker than it is. What you want is a nice progressive map such as Custom Code. I have one on my A3 1.8T which is running a KO3 turbo. Gains are 45bhp and 75nm. Car feels much better to drive now but even with a decent airfilter, Forge TIP and 3" cat back exhaust I'd be VERY shocked if it was making over 200bhp.

I have no experience of Jabba maps personally but have driven a few other brands that I found excessively aggressive, does make you worry for the health of the poor little clutch receiving a big slab of torque like that!

Do they offer any sort of trial/money back?

Not quite.
But yes, a normal KO3 equipped engine won't make more than 200bhp. A K03S can see 240bhp with the right map and a couple of other modest upgrades here & there.

My car was a VW new Beetle. Check the specs if you like, but you'll find that all UK 1.8T models had the KO3S turbo, yet were factory rated at 150bhp.

On its initial dyno runs, power was quite inconsistent (even stock VAG code was occasionally shoddy). Some runs it gave 155bhp or so. And on its better runs, it was closer to 175bhp. After mapping it gave a pretty consistent 228bhp.
If we take the higher stock dyno reading as a reference, then we see that the before/after difference is about 53bhp. Which is right around what you would expect for a good map on this engine with a KO3S.

As for being aggressive. It was nothing of the sort. But it did go like stink! Being that dyno developed custom maps are what Jabba specialise in, they can optimise the map far better to an individual car. Plus, they can set it up any way you like. You can have tame and progressive, or aggressive, and anything in between. Tell them what you want and they can do it for you. When they are done you get a nice rolling road print out too, showing your before/after dyno figures.

I don't doubt that Customcode is good though. So im sure thats worth looking into also. But its rather closer to a generic off the shelf map, than a true custom map that their trade name would appear to imply.

I didnt know Vw ran the KO3S in the bug with 150bhp, I'm used to Audi's that only ran the KO3 in the 150bhp engines (AGU motors). The later A3 1.8Ts were a KO3s which was 180bhp, I had no idea VW used to have the KO3S on the bugs and still only ran them in 150bhp form.

The KO3S is will make well over 200bhp but could do with a front mount to reduce heat soak and a decent down pipe to get the best out of them.

As for Jabba maps, I'm only going on what mates have told me that have had them. They all had HUGE power low down that made the car very quick off the line but they all ran out of puff further up the range. These were mainly on KO3 Mk4 Golfs though.

For a stock engine with no mods a generic map is fine. If I was to do any further mods on mine such as fitting a KO3S, decent downpipe, decat and FMIC it'd be a custom map all day long but on a pretty much stock motor a generic maps fine.

KO3 or KO3S, they will both run out of puff higher up in the rev band, as they are very small turbo's and just don't have the airflow capacity. But the KO3S obviously fairs noticeably better.

I just dug out my old dyno plot scan.
This is on a bone stock KO3S 1.8T. Just an upgraded DV, and that was it. Shows before/after mapping.
