I bought an Audi R8 in March of this year. In the first instance I can't believe how bad the service is from a main dealer. I can't say who that is for obvious reasons but having seen earlier comments I'm starting to assume they are all as bad as one and other.

Towards the end of May my ignition went( 3000miles) and the dealer had my car for almost a week-couldn't give me a courtesy car and when I took the car to them I was left standing for 20 minutes until soembody relieved me of my keys. In the compamies defence, the manager called me and apologised, claiming it to be a one off - but it wasn't!

Yesterday I had an alert which read 'gearbox malfucntion continue to drive' After calling the same delaership I was told to call Audi Assist. I did- they told me sarcastically 'well carry on driving!!' After I queried this response they advised speaking with my local delalership.......they eventually sent out a mobile mechanic who informed me that the car had had a recall for software upgrades that hopefully would sort the problem. Why wasn't this done when I took it to them for the ignition! I'm told this time they will kindly loan me an A4 whilst its with them.

My questions are to any R8 owners out there-
Have you heard of this recall? Apparently there have been two recalls to date.

Would you be happy with this service having spent one hell of a lot of money on this car? (I wish I'd stuck with my Noble...)

Would you be happy driving an A4 under the circumstances?

Has any other driver noticed how stubborn the R tronic gear box is to change from 2nd down to first- particularly at roundabouts which means you end up taking off in 2nd and kangaroo jumping it across the path of the on coming vehicle?

My Noble was so much less hassle.........

Sadly I can't relate to the R8 ownership bit, but otherwise what you've described is typical Audi so far as I can tell - especially the excessive waiting around for someone to trouble themselves to 'help' you. Personally I wouldn't really care about tooling around in an A4 for a week - it's just temporary wheels - but I absolutely resent being made to wait for 5, 10, 20 minutes - I have better things to do with my time than stand in their ghastly showroom, and if their damned product worked I wouldn't have to have taken an hour out of my day to be there at all!

In my few months of Audi ownership I do not get the sense that their dealers, or the company itself, are up to the job of delivering a true premium product (which includes service). BMW definitely do it much better, even Land Rover (going back some years now) offered great service - their product required far too much of it of course, but nonetheless..!

I think the R8 is a very impressive machine, however if I was in the market for such a thing I think I'd be standing in my local Porsche dealer ordering a C4S instead. Their service is expensive, but at least they know how to do it most of the time. Or maybe I'd order an M6 and enjoy the change... but anyway that's not the point(!).

Audi is not up to the job of supporting an 80-100k car - in fact they do a shoddy job of supporting a 25k car - and that's all there is to it in my book.

Hang on a sec, not sure I understand entirely.

There were free staff sitting at their desks who sat there and watched you for 20 minutes? Why didn't you walk up and say hello!

There seem to be good dealers and bad dealers around.

There are 2 close to my location, 1 I have vowed never to set foot in again and 1 which is ok-ish. The service I have got from a 3rd dealer in a Cathedral city in the next count north from me has been brilliant so guess where my business is going in the future.

Poor service indeed.

But what the hell? Do you expect to get an identical car spec when you go in for a recall? You expect every Audi dealer in the country to have a fleet of R8s at their disposal?

The OK ish one is really p*****g me off at the moment! They dont appear to have outbound telephones because when receptionist takes a message they NEVER call back. As a result, they are expecting my car today and it wont be there, they wont know though because depite me phoning them 3 times yesterday they didnt call back, even after a made the point that they never call back.

Plus they can never fix anything on the first visit so I have 2 50 mile round trips to get warranty work done!....Muppets!

Sorry I am cross furious

I've also had the "call Audi assist" when I've called the dealer, only to be told to "call the dealer" by Audi assist. Really fks me off that they don't take ownership of issues.

Regarding re-flashing of software. Anything in service is only normally done on owner-complaint.

I think most of the replies confirm my experience sad to say. Thanks for the responses and if anyone has any comments about the gear change I'd appreciate hearing from you.

In the meantime my views on courtesy cars? If its a service or something that I'm asking the dealer to do then I take anything- when my car has just a few thousand miles on the clock, its being put into the garage because of faults of their design- then yes- I expect a car, if not comparable, certainly of a reasonable spec- call me old fashioned!

For a decent car when yours has failed due to Audi product quality, phone audi customer services and ask for a better replacement, you may need to get hold of a manager and get a bit arsey. It worked for me i was given a Q7 (too big for real world use but quite nice) and they paid for my cars next service!

regardless of the amount of money spent it's also similar to my experience with Audi - I had to send a few emails to a few directors before I got my car issues sorted (drop me a PM if you still have no joy)

as for the A4, yeah, it wouldn't bother me - better than them giving you lift to the nearest station

Mandy have you recieved a call from audi 24-48hrs after getting your car back at any point?

Sadly i am too far away to offer assistance on a dealer near to you who will provide a decent level of service however yeovil audi down south portland way are very good and if the service i recieved from the r8 salesman at guildford is anything to go by guildford audi are very good as well.

If all else fails my local (kent) audi dealers are very good.

All the people on here slagging off audi are wrong imho. I have had dealings with various car companies and dealers some are very good some are very poor. I was for ex charged £110 for a headlight bulb to be changed by a dealer in south london after waiting for an hr and a half (its literally a five minute job if i do it myself using their technique).

Yet i had HUGE issues with my local bmw dealer when i wanted to test drive a 5 series with a view to replacing my daily hack and will never use them again as they were just incredibly rude and arrogant.

Stick with it and find a dealer who will provide you with a decent service. As for the recalls yet again you should have recieved a phone call about that from your dealer as any recalls on my audi i get calls from my local to let me know and ask if i would like to book in to get it sorted.

Not had any problems from my local dealers (both of them). I think it does seem to be a bit hit or miss though.

As for the A4 - I wouldn't expect much better, you're basically getting a car they can sell on used, which restricts you to diesel repmobiles largely.

Hi, in relation to the A4, id be happy long as it was decent spec?
a close friend of mine took his R8 for a gearbox problem and the dealer gave him a Audi A3 1.6 and told him to drive to a local National car hire centre where they have a Audi S8 ready for him. i guess it varies on the dealer?

That sounds like something that Audi Customer Care sorted out. It worth phoningthem if the dealer gives you a basic car particularly if your car will be off the road for a few days

It's probably a hit or a miss to find a good garage. I've recently bought an S4 and have used Audi garage in Stirling. Excellent service all round and very friendly. A higher spec courtesy car would be nice, considering how much you have spent with Audi on your R8
