Hello All,

Don't think I've posted in here before but just thought I'd pass-on an observation from a transmission specialist I spoke to recently. My 2000MY 4.2L A6 Avant Quattro developed a fatal transmission fault a couple of weeks a go = estimate to fix £2500/car value £3000 tops I reckon (134k miles on the clock). Anyway, whilst I was at their shop I noted to him that there was another A6 Avant (newish model) in the yard that was obviously DOA on the tranny front due to it being on a dolly type thing so that it could be moved around the yard. He then stated that they usually have 3 or 4 in at any one time (Audis) and that this was a quiet week. "Especially those new 6-gear ones - they keep us in business!"

The replacement for the A6 is going to be japanese btw.

My 2p.

Not come across any problems with the later boxes; however as you've found out the wallet way the early ones did indeed list 'chocolate' as a major component frown

I had a 2.5tdi tip A4 with transmission failure on a car I bought for work. I think at the time the main dealer wanted £4 or 5k to replace the transmission. I've never bought an Audi since.

Tame Tech reckons the 6 speed Quattro Tips are bullet proof.

Did I use those exact words???

Let me explain, expand a bit on that. Compared to the DSG auto box's (Which often fail as low as 40,000 miles), and the dreaded multi tronics (which often fail, all the time) the tip-tronics are indeed bullet proof.

However! ANY auto transmission which is sealed for life is gonna have a limited life span. If I owned one I'd feel pretty worried as it neared 140k. We really dont see many fail, but those that do are 120-140k almost always.

The ZF and Merc Boxes in the Jaguars I used to work on failed at around the same millage, they too were sealed for life.

The older ZF boxes that had regular oil and filter changes went on for ever.

One more thing

The Audi 6 speed tip tronic auto boxes are basically just normal electronically controlled torque converter style auto gearbox's made by ZF.

ZF also supply gearbox of the same (or very similar) type to Jaguar, BMW, Porche, Landrover, and I dare say many other manufactures.

It would be very unfair to say, Broken Audi gearboxes keep the transmission specialists in busyness. Unless your are talking about multi tronics, but I dont think anyone actually rebuilds them.

Its always possible to change the oil on any auto transmission.

Perhaps I should have said the term sealed for life, means there is no planned service interval for the oil change. You can still drain and refill the oil. ALthough you will need a special Audi filling tool.

Slighty OT, but what is "life" in a sealed-for-life sense? Do they actually mean never or is it some approximation to expected service life, i.e. 100K, 10 years etc ?

I mean, I've run out of pages in my service book so is my car now beyond it's expected "life" ?
