The reverse gear on my Tiptronic Gearbox has for want of a better term started slipping. Forward gears are all fine. Audi tell me that there is nothing that can be done except replace the gearbox at nearly £4000. Can they be repaired or is replacement the only option?

Ring an auto transmission specialist. If a new one is £4000, its likely they could rebuild it for £1500 ish.

Audi dealers cant usually repair faults like that, (A) because Audi dont always release the parts. (B) because Audi dont always release the special tools required. (C) its too labour intensive, at main dealer rates teh hours involved would cost more than the new box.

Try Roger Galvin at the "quattro workshop" near Lutterworth, J 22 of M1. http://www.thequattroworkshop.co.uk/

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Having followed a couple of your leads which brought the cost down to just north of £2k for a refurb, I decided to Google ZF who make the gearbox for Audi and found JT Automatics in Erith, Kent/SE London who have just fitted a brand new gearbox for £1550 with a 24mth/24k Warranty.

Bloody hell, they're a darn sight more reasonable than some prices I've seen. Don't feel quite as terrified about my A8's box turning to mush now.

Same problem with my '99 A6 4.2, called JT after a quick search on the Internet and they seem to be the cheapest around at the moment...although it's £1500 I could do without spending mad

Just find it quite staggering that my car's only done 86k and needs a new box already...

Amazing indeed but seems as auto boxes get more complicated they are expected to go between 70 and 120k, nice earner for the car companies. JT is a classic no frills service (no car wash etc @ £2500 ) but were efficent and polite and get the job done.
