What makes an Audi special?
Discussion
They're boring, therefore they don't upset anyone when you turn up in it, also means they never really excite anyone either but that's the point isn't it??
Apart from that?? Not sure really, they are well behind BMW and Mercedes for driving dynamics, they are not as comfy as many Mercs either, but they do have nice interiors and tend to look nice design wise so that is a plus point.

Mine?
Subtle looks, superb build quality, great noise, comfy/quiet M-way cruiser and can carry absolutely immense speeds on twisty/rough and generally challenging B-roads.
Thats what makes it special for me.
On the supject of BMW V Audi dynamics I took a mate who worked for a BMW main dealer out in my S4 and he was scared s
tless by the speed it could carry through the corners on rough/potholed/twisty lanes near were I live. After he drove it himself we agreed that an M3 may give more feel and feedback but he was the first to say that an M3 would have never been able to keep up in those conditions.

They are not driven by chavs, and they don't end up on council estates when they're 6 years old, badged as better models.
There are a lot of blinged up A3 1.9Tdi's around my way with blacked out windows and big stereos.I've liked Audis since watching the Group B cars in the 80s. I liked the fact they didn't shout 'badge snob' and totally bought into the 'Tell Charles I'm on my way, taxi!' thing.
Perception of the marque has changed now, but they are still good looking well built cars and I see no reason to sell up just because Charles and his mates have all got one.

You haven't been to Northern Ireland where derv (red no doubt) A4s seem to be the vehicle of choice for sumbags aged 30 upwards, the title having been snatched from the Vectra and just out of the grasp of the VW Bora. Simple.
They're built to outlast their owners.
The fastest models go like stink.
You add rain, and the fastest models *still* go like stink, while the competition slithers gracelessly off the road.
And anyone over the age of 35 has a soft spot for the original Audi Quattro. I especially recall the TV ad in which it tracked a glider. Love it.

I agree about the original quattro, my parents had one, what a car, I can remember pinching it as a teenager! I loved the quattro sport as a kid as well. 300bhp seemed like a lot back then. A ford focus rs has that now! Buoutou have to wonder why they don't do a ford gt style modern version. The quattro is still a handsome shape and I'm not sure Audi have managed to top it since. That said the R8 is a fine car and the styling is a real grower.
Congrats. I have to say I'm coming round to the idea of an r8 myself. 911s just don't do it for me, and while the r8's styling was a bit too unusual for me when it first came out, I'm starting to think it was just ahead of it's time. It's a stunning and wholly original, iconic piece of design. A future classic.

Cheers! You just don't see many on the roads either - when you do they really make you appreciate their unique styling. I'll report back with an owners view once I have a few miles under my belt.I have a bit of a compulsion for older quattros, i sold my A4 2.5tdi quattro sport and went back 18 years and bought a 90 quattro 20v sport. It cost a tenth of the A4 but its a brilliant car, so much more than it looks, and even for its age in standard trim, goes well. My missus thinks i am nuts but i love it, yeah it gives me headache from time to time but there is something about this era of audi has some odball appeal.
ooo, sidetrack, haley berry in swordfish in lingerie... hubba hubba!
edit: its not a shouty car, it just does its job well regardless of road conditions.. mentioned in a thread recently, and i agree ( i also have an E60 BMW) its not RWD so not driven properly, disagree, its not dramatic grr look at me going sideways everywhere to go where i need to. no fuss, no drama, just does the job, appeals to my nature.

I am on 3rd Audi and to be honest nothing comes close to their interiors it such a nice place to be. Cannot see me going over to BMW, had two Mercs build is not a patch on what they used to be most C classes are built in South Africa now. And for me the Beamer might be a more involving drive but as an every day cruiser am I going to notice I do not think so. I will stay with my A5
Agreed, it's the understated design that works and lack of ubiquity. Every man and his dog has a BM these days and the 3 series whilst good to drive, looks far too conventional between the different chassis.
At the other end of the scale, a blinged up Audi doesn't scream, "look at me" like the equivalent blacked out BM with a drainpipe for an exhaust.
Interior is such a nice place to be in, quality is second to none and the red dash is lovely. None of the multicoloured electronics of the Japanese marque's or the confusing knobs and dials of a BM.
Merc quality has declined recently but they seem to be trying to bring it back up to the level is used to be. Apart from the McLaren editions, I find most Mercs boring to look at although the dash is clear and easy to use. If I replaced the current S-Line with a non Audi, it would most def be with a Merc though.
I guess what makes Audi special for me is combination of style (best of the German cars IMHO), quality and drive.

IMO the Audi range are all starting to morph into the same design - when one comes flying up behind you on a wave of diesel torque and sits two inches from your rear bumper whilst you patiently wait in the outside lane 80mph queue - you can never really tell which model it is.
And IMO every Audi comes ready Chav'd up from the factory with a nice set of Dame Edna style LED driving lights!
Can't beat the original WR and original TT for design purity. IMO opinion Audi Design seem to be trying too hard these days and they are in danger of falling into the Porsche lazy design trap.
