Gents,

Currently have a 911 which has got to go thanks to growing family. Been looking at S4's or an Allroad as practical alternative. Would prefer the 4.2 v8 but don't want to spend that much if I can help it - there are plenty of 2.7l motors about but I'm a bit worried about the reliability/fuel consumption of that unit. Anyone had any experiences of them?? What should I be looking for?

Alternatively, is the 140 brake tdi unit easily tunable?? if so, to what level and how much would it cost??

Cheers,

LeoSayer

The fuel consumption I get on my 2.7 auto is anywhere from 17 in town to 25 on mway / A roads.

I've had an S4 2.7T for 2 years and fuel consumption averages from about 20 round town to about 27-28 on a run.
Remapped it's blistering fast with a huge amount of torque from 1500rpm.
You won't be disappointed with one.

Relaibility wise it was good - no different to any other 8 year old 125000 mile car.

Many will not have been looked after by a specialist and could have boost leaks, leaking diverter valves or malfunctioning MAFs - most Audi dealers won't pick up on this.
A specialist service history is a bonus - and don't be put off by a few mods / upgrades. When I was looking for mine I wanted a standard car as I was wary of modifications - however, having had 2 years experience if I was buying again I would not be put off by a mildly modified car.

There's a rumour that turbos can be prone to failure but also plenty of Owners running around with high mileages and no problems.

Just sold it and got an RS4 as a long term keeper.

Have a look on www.audisrs.com or www.rs246.com for good advice.

as above really. Well-looked after examples can (and do) last >150,000 on original turbos.

Incidentally, I'm looking to sell my very low mileage (48,500) unmodified 1999 full facelift Nogaro Blue S4 Avant. PM me if you want more details.
