Just been to look at a Golf, to my disappointment the last service was performed by a back street garage.

The car wasn't/isn't due it's 40k service. If I buy it do you think I can get the service done again at a VW garage?
Or am I being a little anal? The car is only 2yrs old, so still under warranty.

Cheers

You can service the car as often as you like, I bought my golf from a car supermarket, they serviced it and I had it serviced again 1000 miles later.. As far as the service book says it's only ever been done by vw

IMO you're being a little anal, wink but the vast majority of buyers will be too when you want to sell it, so you could be doing the right thing.

If it was me I wouldn't worry about it, I'd take it to an independent specialist for all the servicing from now on, you'll get just as good service as a main dealer (sometimes a lot better) for a fraction of the cost.

If the car is only 2 years old then i'd maintain the VWFSH until at least 5 years old. Also, i'd get the VW garage to give it a thorough going over and highlight any issues.
One of the main reasons people use 'back street' garage is cost. Therefore, they may have foregone some maintenance items/issues (although on a 2 yr old car there shouldn't be many).

IMHO

On the flipside, the cheaper the hourly rate, the more maintenance they can do for their £.

Much "main dealer" history is the bare minimum, many optional parts are never done. Receipts/invoices are what you want, you know what has actually been done, rather than caring too much about who did it. Stamps can be forged too, much harder to do with invoices/receipts etc.

Back street garage can mean many things though. It can be the great local independent you know and trust, or a well known indie. It can also be the Phil Mitchell arches jobbie too, so check the actual history of what was done.

Jeez it's a Golf not a Bugatti. Anyone can service it.

Just make sure they've used official VW parts so as not to void the warranty. And don't expect any out of warranty goodwill.
