Hi all, i had a bump last week, someone hit the rear of my MK1 Octavia. The insurance assessor came out this morning and decided it needs:-

  • New Tow Bar (twin electrics)
  • Full Rear Bumper Including mount
  • New bumpber plastic trim
the reason i'm wondering how much it will come out at is i'm wondering if it'll go CAT D or if the insurance will repair it....

Shouldnt think so.

3-400 for the towbar.

250-300 for the bumper

Bumper fixings maybe another 50 quid

Bill wont go over a grand.

Ah ok. Well the car is an X Reg Octavia Tdi with 120k on the clock. Worth about 12-15 hundred quid. Might be borderline write-off then?!

Nah, that's 7-800 quid of cosmetics at retail - you'll be fine.

My thoughts exactly. The bumper is already covered in scratches etc, but the one caused by the tow bar hitting it is such that it requires an entire new one. I can live with the damage if it goes CAT D! In terms of fixing the tow bar, i NEVER tow with it, the bar came on the car when i bought it, i left it on as an accident protector anyway! i reckon a quick bend back with a large scaf pole will do the trick, if i ever sell it (unlikely) i'll take it off as i'd hate for someone to tow something heavy with a weakened tow bar!

Of course, when the assessor came out and asked what i towed with it. "A great big heavy caravan of course" hehe
