I have been seriously considering getting a 2-3 year old RS4 Avant and, having got some helpful replies to the post I made yesterday, will take the liberty of asking a few more questions.

Service history:

In addition to a full service history, what other maintenance work would you expect to have been done on a B7 RS4 that has done up to, say, 30,000 miles? Is there anything that *really* should have been done on a car of that age?

Price:

I see that most such cars (under 30,000 miles, not over 3 years old) at Audi main dealers and independents like Fontain are priced between £35 - 40,000. I was thinking that it should be possible to get something for not much over £30,000. Is that being unrealistic?

Warranty:

I'd be interested to hear some views as to the merits of purchasing a warranty for beyond 3 years. And am I right to thing that Audi have automatically extended the warranty cover for DRC to 5 years?

Once again, many thanks in advance for all advice ....

Well..here were a few recalls dont know them all but the two i had were..Battery holder in boot can crack and needs plastic welding..also i had a recall for i think the fuel pump or similar. All done under warranty.

Drivers seat inflatable bolsters gave up on mine broken acuator done under warranty.

Coil pack went again warranty.

Of course check for DRC issues although i have a 2006 plate and have been luckily enough not to have any issues with the DRC.

Drivers door handle can work loose but i believe this is common with all A4s again mine done under warranty.

I,d check the discs and pads are nearly new and have been repalces recently if required this will save you £1000plus easy.

Tyres aint cheap make sure plenty of tread and IMO same type all round.

FSH is essential with these cars as they require TLC especially with oil as they can use quite a bit. I dont think its until the 3rd service things really get expensive although i may be wrong??

Ive loved every minute of mine and have forgiven the odd hiccup and i have had excellent service from Audi believe it or not..my local dealer is spot on and got to know the master tech and service manager well they couldnt do enough!!!!

fOR 30K OR LESS you will get an early 06 model with very high mileage i would guess??

I,d prefer if you can afford it to outlay a little more for a younger car still in warranty to get any jobs done before shes out of warranty.

I,m unsure if Audi have exteneded all RS4S to 5 yeasr for the DRC..someone on here may know more??

I personally didnt get the extended warranty..maybe i,l regret that in the long run but i dont do mega mileage so i,m hoping she;ll be fine!!

Get one mate you wont regret it..ulimate sleeper, great everyday, and a true petrolheads wet dream. And the best thing is most mere mortals thinks its an A4!!

ONLY THOSE IN THE KNOW..KNOW ITS A RS4....

Enjoy..

Professionaly speaking? Currently you are unlikely to buy one for the price you suggest - demand is stronger than ever and supply is well down.

VAT qualifying cars are going for retail money even between dealers as the demand for export is also collosal.

Certainly in the immediate future I don't imagine prices will move a lot.

I cant see you buying one for less than £35,000 - certainly not one in good order that has been well maintained.

Dont touch one that isnt full Audi history and if it has been bumped around (alloys/scuff marks etc) i would steer clear.

I think you are being unrealistic on the price, there is a greater demand for the car than used supply .. I did see an Avant that had a heavy prang on a track .. think if you google 'rs4 crash' you will find the vid ... that car might be £30k !!

The only other thing I would advise is regular oil changes ... Yep DRC is fully covered by Audi, so no worries there.

I was about 10 feet away from that one when it went off at Coombe (driving an Avant the same age and colour).

Same age and colour went off at speed in front of me on the ring also - maybe there's something about the silver ones? wink

If you get an approved used Audi from dealer, they'll give you a years warranty anyway. At the moment they're givign away two years free servicing (not sure if that is still the same for RS cars, but I was offered it on S3/4's I been looking at).

If you haven't visited already, there's a wealth of information and advice at www.rs246.com - you'll need the B7 RS4 forum.

This is my ultimate car at the moment, RS4 avant.

I'm aiming to get one next year, love the blue colours.

Especially love them with the milltek breathing.

And if I was a total idiot with more money than sense, I'd love to get the MTM super charging done. You'd have to get a black one to hide that scooby style scoop on the bonet. But how mental is it?

Many thanks to all for the replies; this really has been very helpful.

I am now debating with myself whether to look for one now, or delay until some time next year (simply because I would have *very* little opportunity to use it over the next few months). But I'm pretty much convinced that this is the right option for me.

If you will allow one more question:

There is clearly some sense in buying a car that is sufficiently under three years old to get a period in warranty. But, since cars from Audi dealers seem to come with a year's warranty anyway, is there any significant advantage in looking for one that still has some of the original three year warranty remaining? (Obviously, as time goes by, an increasing proportion of cars will be out of warranty.)

The common problem relates to DRC leaks which Audi will do within 5 years anyway.

Buy the best car you can afford, don't worry overly about an extra 5 minutes of warranty here or there smile
