My colleague has recently bought a 56 plate model and is finding the clutch is juddering and making knocking noises when carrying out hill starts. The VW dealer says they all do that sir, but he is on the verge of chopping it in if it can't be resolved.
Anyone shed any light on this?

Is it intermittent? How would you describe it? My friends Mk5 golf also does this, so does mine. Can be quite bad at times but mines no longer under warranty so I'm not keen on taking it back. My friends is however but his is not as bad as mine.

It would appear to be pretty much everytime a hill start is carried out, much less severe starting off on the flat.

Yep, mines more or less the same. But I think my problem has been going on for a while and gradually got worse. Tell your friend to take it to the dealers as his is under warranty. Please tell me what they say.

The service manager drove the car yesterday and told them it is the supercharger loading the engine, he tried to move the car with the handbrake on which gave the same effect as a hill start.
They have insisted that the complaint is logged on the system in case of any catastrophic failure in the future, but they seem to be getting told you have to live with it.

utter bollards.
sounds like a clutch fault or possible and engine mount failure.
Not sure if these have a dual mass flywheel, which is why they are reluctant to open it up.
get it sorted ASAP or as soon as warranty is over they'll suddenly turn 'deaf'

I think I should show you a video of my car doing it so we can see if the problems are the same?

Usually a dual mass flywheel problem - certain conditions (such as hill start or gentle take off) allows the springs between the 2 parts of the flywheel to 'bounce' and cause judder, being more agressive and you load the springs and get a smoother take off. This has been common since they started this design of flywheel in the 1.8 20v engine, although I am only assuming that the 1.4tsi still uses it.
As others advise, i would insist that it is sorted.
