I'm in the market for a fast estate. I've had a few Volvo T5s before and am leaning this way again purely because I know them well and they are cheap to buy, and not expensive to maintain/run.

However, I am looking into my options as I would like to keep my next car a good few years and the T5 doesn't really excite me, despite it being a damn good car.

One of the identified cars I want to look at is the S4 2.7. It seems that between £5 and £7.5k should get me a 2000/2001 Avant with 70-100k on the clock. I know they are considerably faster than the T5 as I had a run in with one whilst driving my T5 before. I like the fact they have AWD as I often visit my parents in France and drive in quite wintery conditions so whilst not essential, AWD would be beneficial.

However, I cannot seem to find a decent buyers guide for these cars. I'd like to know what to look for when going to buy one, plus anything that might need doing to them at this sort of mileage. I've looked into servicing, and a few Audi specialists on the 'net quote £200-£275 for a standard service which seems very reasonable. Tyres also don't seem expensive. It would be interesting to see a current/past owners breakdown of running costs.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, or even better, be kind enough to put fingers to keyboard with some information?

Some people will tell you that they aren't an inspiring drive. the older chassis isn't as good as the new one but car for car. I drove my S4 2.7 avant back to back with an RS4 and an S4 v8 just after they come out.

The old S4 for me for the money they cost when compared to a new audi just cannot be beaten.

They drive much nicer than the RS4 because they have smaller turbos, less power obviously but beautifull to drive, power on tap in any gear.

I still miss my old Nogaro Avant with the matching alcantara trim.

without doubt the best car I have ever owned.

drop links are consumables, cam belt is £600 - £800 at audi because the front end has to come off.

Check all suspension bushes and arms at front.

Exhaust is expensive at about £1000

Turbos are a £3k engine out job to replace.

You cannot buy better for your money.

and your dog can come along too..

neil.

Had a 2.7 S4 for 2 years and it was a great car. MRC remapped it was ballistic.

Only changed it for an RS4.

Are the turbos really £3k at an Indy?

Prices like that scare me a bit. I'm not frightened of repair bills (it was expensive, and is a performance car after all...), but spending £3k on a consumable part on a £5-6k car is slightly hair raising!

Just a figure to note because the engine needs lifted to do them. Chances are an indy would do the job cheaper and don't be alarmed since they are a long lasting part. the point I am making is that you can buy the cars cheaply and they are very cheap for what they are which is a genuine 160mph 0-60 in 5.6 seconds super car.

just buy with your eyes open and preferably with a full service history. They can like any super car though get expensive when something unexpected happens.
