My dad's thinking of getting one of these. The latest one - currently drives a MK V GTI. Any opinions on how good they are? It won't be quite as fast as his current car, but supercharger + turbocharger, 7 gears should be pretty swift acceleration. Are these things any good?

It's the one that comes with the 7 speed DSG box. Any ideas how it will compare to his current Golf? I'm guessing with the 7 gears the ratios will be a bit shorter so acceleration should be comparable through the gears?

Both the 1.4 TSI 122PS and the 1.4 TSI 160PS found in the GT have 7 speed DSG boxes. Assuming this is similar to the new 7 Speed STronic found in the latest Audi (S4 for example). The 160PS version hits 60 in 8 secs, slightly quicker than the GTD but lags the GTI by a second or so.

I think that might be the 120bhp turbo-only model.

AFAIK gears 1-6 have the same ratio as the manual, but 7th is a longer ratio which gives better MPG and C02 emissions, on paper at least.

It's not a GTI by any stretch of the imaginiation.

I think he got the 122 one, put the order in the other day and hasn't even driven a new golf yet. He just doesn't feel he needs a GTI for his daily driving and he said it doesn't look too different from the GTI. Should be getting it in about December and hopefully it's not too asthmatic.

Very very very good cars, quite possibly the best sub 2.0 engine on the market.

Good to hear, should be getting it in December. I'm a bit sceptical but it'll be interesting.
