A plea for some help... I think my dealer is trying to rip me off on the price of my audi A6 service, and just wanted to check the general consensus on here before I plunder my hard earned cash.
It’s a 2.0 l Diesel and on a 05 plate, its just having its 60,000 miles serves and a new cam belt, but the total price for the service is coming in at £1421 !!!
OK its having new rear brake pads and some anti roll bar, but I get very dubious when they say its needs all these things, yet the car seems to drive perfectly well. I’m happy that a cam belt needs doing, I fully understand that, but they are also trying to push a new water pump on with it at the cost of over £100, does it really need this, my local garage are very puzzled as to why!
Also does it need the roll bar, how can I check!
My suspicious are aroused when I was told it needed new brake fluid, as the current fluid was past its replacement date, I asked how they knew and he said they replace it every two years, so we looked in the book and it was replaced in 2008. Now that to me doesn’t need doing until 2010, or maybe Audi’s maths is different...
If you can let me know your thoughts that would be very kind.
Many Thanks,
Iain

Hmm, does seem a tad steep!

I do remember that the rear brakes can be expensive to replace because of the electronic handbrake release.

They shouldn't do any work without you saying so, should they?

They are not doing any work until i say go, i'm just a bit shocked as the web site says major service is only £200 and a cam belt of £329. But they want some £420 for the cam belt as they say i need a water pump!

I say get the service done for your stamp, then take the car to an independent and ask about the waterpump and cambelt. I wouldn't pay those prices.

Water pump and cambelt should always be done as one. The impellors on the waterpump wear out/break with time and you really wouldn't want the consequences of it failing for the sake of a 100 notes or whatever extra it costs. Must say it sounds expensive though especially being a tdi with no plugs to change.

...sounds expencive...frown

You got that right, i know buying an Audi isn't going to be cheap, i had an RS4 before (we had a baby so it had to make room for a more sesnsible car) and expected that sort of price on servicing for a machine like that. But a simple 2.0l Diesel £700 was what i'd budgeted!!!

Dunno about the A4, but our local dealer quoted £1600 for the cam belt change on our A8.... told them to get knotted.

Your service should be £99 if you just want the stamp in the book for an oil and filter change. Because for £199 you will get an oil and filter change plus air and fuel filter changes if required, Only the air filter will be due at 60,000 miles. Your fuel filter is due every 40,000 miles, so an extra £100 for an air filter isnt exactly worth it!
Your cambelt is advised at 75,000 miles or 5 years so its not quite due yet but upto you if you want it doing whilst its in. Ive never had a problem with a 2.0 tdi water pump so leave that out. Have the belt done at main dealer for £329.
I doubt that your rollbar needs replacing! Are you sure its not the rollbar links? If so these are an easy fit if you have a couple of 16mm spanners and parts are cheap so maybe have a go yourself?
Rear pads should be £99 fitted.
So really your looking at 600 quid ish

How exactly does it brake down, just saying £1400 sounds like loads. Just the 60k service should be no more than £400 so you've clearly go a lot of extra going on there.

Not sure if AVS is included in the £199 special offer.

Pads should be £99, cam belt should be £329 and brake fluid £49. (Audi UK enforced special offers) Normal price for belt is more like £500 and £130ish for the pads and £70ish for the fluid change..
Dealers can charge extra for the water pump, It genuinely is a good idea to have it, isnt a fiddle or anything. We charge 0.3 hours + the part.

Whats the labour rate.

Is it just having pads or discs as well.

If its a rear anti roll bar there fairly common, not so much on A6 but A4 definitely.
You dont have to have it done, there are some plastic sleeves where the bar goes through its bushes that come away giving to much movement between the bar and the bush, usually noticeable to the customer as a knocking noise. IF you cant hear it, or detect any ill handling, don't bother, they will report it again next service, if it gets really bad it will fail an MOT.

Anything you would like to know from the other side of the workshop glass, dont hesitate to ask.

Have you tried a specialist, there should be a decent one near to you.
I remember when I rang Audi Chandlers Ford Southampton for a quote on the belt change on my a6. They didn't have a price to hand so would call me back.

The worst thing any workshop manager can say to you is "Are you sat down sir?"

If i remember correctly it was £850 plus the vat.

A specialist did it for £399.

Worth a phone call or two.

Thanks everyone, i phoned about yesterday and the cam belt and water pump seem to be a 'do it together' thing. So i'm happy with that. I've asked them to brake down the other bits and bobs, and hope to find out more today. Once i have a complete brake down i'll post the results. Kind of get a feeling its like lets see what we can add on here and get away with...
