VW golf 1.6 fsi, MK5
Discussion
Hi, just a quick question, i have just bought a mk5 golf, its the 1.6 fsi one, when you start the car up its very noisy like it doesnt have enough oil in it, it only lasts a few seconds then runs fine, i've checked the oil and its fine. Is it maybe just the oil circulating the engine?
Sorry if this seems a stupid question!

we bought an 04 plate mk5 as a replacement to our Civic that was stolen. we bought it on 1st august. shortly afterwards it started making a noise on startup, not always but it sounded like a diesel for a few seconds then cleared it's self.
are you sat down ?
in our case it was cam tensioners. apparently there is a small amount of flexibility in the timing chain, this is taken up by tensioners, depending where the engine stops in it's cycle (so i'm told) you can get low oil pressure on startup which will cause these to move excessively.
the bad news. if it is this, it's a 6 hour job at VW (might be more or less elsewhere) parts werent that excessive but the whole job was about £800 - luckily our car was under a vw warranty.
they also found the cam position sensor on ours to be leaking oil whilst in there.
dont know where you are in the country, but VW in GeeCross (stockport) were very helpful in diagnosing this quickly

Yeah that's what it sounds like when you start it up, like a diesel but only for a few seconds then its ok. I bought the car a couple of weeks ago with a month warrenty so I think I better look into this further. I'm about an hour away from stockport so not to far. Thanks for your help.
If you come from Sheffield then when you hit the island for the m67 do a left and go past mcdonnalds, follow that road for about 2 miles and the vw garage is at the very end of it.
i'm sure a loca VW dealer could help you out, but we bought the car from a dealer down south (who were fantastic, but couldnt offer any advice over the phone) and VW assist came out for another issue and werent sure from my description, but the garage i took it to told me what they thought it was and found the issue straight away when they had it.
definitly get it in though, you dont want to be taking chances with the timing chain.

Godawfull clattery engines at the best of times. Mine too had to have the cam chain changed. Mine was under warranty so FOC.
It's a known problem and there is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) issued to the dealers by VW. Have a chat with your local VW dealer. I would be expecting them to do it for free.
