Wonder if someone can help me with this one?

2007 S8 V10 FSI (Bit of warranty remaining)

Occasionally (happened twice now) the parking brake has a hissy fit, whirring and grinding like a demon.

On the times it has happened, it's both been after reversing it into the garage, putting it into neutral and stopping the engine.

I usually don't use the parking brake, as it's a smooth level surface, but I'm wondering if I should do?

It eventually goes off (the noise) but only after a good minute/90 seconds.

Is it worth taking it in for this (known fault) or is it just something which happens? (Seems odd if it is)

Another problem, the MMI screen *usually* flips up, though there are occasions when it hasn't done, normally when it's not identified the fingerprint. Today it came up, though remained on the user profile screen and stayed there till I activated Media (instead of radio). It wouldn't let me move the control wheel to select anything.

Grateful for any replies.

Get the same thing with my parking brake on the A8, I understand it is just the parking brake adjusting itself and nothing to worry about.

As for the MMI screen, had that happen once but have no idea why!

Modern cars,(especially high spec ones like the A8)
27 Different ECU's 3 or 4 Different networks, several miles of wires.

You know sometime your PC freezes or does something odd, usually a software error or something, the control modules in your car are no different, they do very occasionally do odd things, just a software glitch. MMI has a few, thats why there are so many software updates for it.

Have had a A8 do that Hand brake thing before, had no idea why so, Email to Audi UK, they said it powers the motors all the way in and all the way out periodically to measure wear rate. No pad on disc sensor on rears on A8 so H/Brake control module calculates the wear this way. TBH I didnt believe a word of it at the time, but it pleased the customer to know all was well, and it was normal.

Gentlemen,

Thanks very much for the answers, sort of put my mind at rest.

@TT, are software updates available FOC, or are they a chargeable items?

Mine's not been done AFAIA, though I do remember asking the last time it was in for a service. Still came back the same as it went (can't remember the numbers sorry) and too tired to look now.

If its still under warranty I would take it in. Then if the items re occur after the end of the warranty you may have a basis to argue your case that it was a pre existing fault that wasn't fully rectified.

This sounds like a plan. It has to go in soon anyway for a trim issue (decorative chrome round the windows, replaced, though now loose)

May as well get them to throw their VAGCOM on it and check it out.

Useful to know although we don't really see A8s anymore, they all get bought up by chaffeur companies these days.

I would get your software updates while in warranty... I understand that many dealers actively try to get work out of doing updates and charge Audi UK back...
