Octavia broken gearbox - Help Please
Discussion
Hi all, i've had an issue with the manual 'box in my Octavia TDi and i'm starting to wonder what the hell is wrong with it.
Basically, when it starts from cold, the gearbox feels generally "grainy" and quite nothcy. Plus, if you change down from 4->3 or 3->2 then it seems to require forcing to go into gear, until the speed is almost slow enough to change down again, at which point it slips in nicely.
The issue is the same when the 'box warms up, just a little less harsh. It'll go down the 'box easier and at higher speeds and feels slightly less grainy on the upchange.
All i've done is change the gear oil so far, which has made little/ no difference!
So, what the hell is up with it?!

More likely to be clutch not separating properly than gearbox from that description. What's it like going into 1st/reverse from standstill?

First/ reverse from a standstill is fine! Does that indicate anything?AdrianR
In answer to the guy who asked mileage - 123k it's on now

See how if feels going into revers, (if your box doesn't have a syncro on revers is better for testing).
Are the gear changed smoother if you match the revs.
How does if feel when you select first gear with the engine running as apposed to with the engine switched off.
Hi mate. So, here goes:-Are the gear changed smoother if you match the revs.

Reverse is ok, it slips in fine with no fuss at all - this is the case whether it's running or engine off. Gear changes are a little smoother if i match the revs, particularly on the down chage - although i wouldn't say it was perfect, just a little smoother.
When you select first with the engine running or engine off, the gears feel the same to change, just as tight and notchy....
Thanks for the advice so far, BTW

Sounds like gear linkage rather than gearbox or clutch.
Generally internal gearbox wear effects the sycro hubs or selector mechanism for individual gears. So when you were talking about all the gears getting bad I was thinking clutch, but from you last post, I think the clutch sounds fine, so I'd say its some sort of linkage fault.
If it was the clutch, would be easier with the engine off, and revers would be as difficult if not worse than 1st.
I'm not actually farmiliar with the linkage on the skoda, so I cant really help any further.
Perhaps a specific VW or Skoda person can suggest exactly what. Do they seize up??
