What to buy for £1000? Advice please.
Discussion
Hello all, I need to get myself a new car, I've only got £1000 and it'll almost certainly have to be VW, I anticipate doing about 16000 miles a year.
The options are either a MK2 Golf GTI, probably 8V due to my tiny budget, or a MK3 8v/16v or vr6.
I've owned 2 MK2 8v's before so know what they're about, but I've never owned a MK3.
I guess what I really want to know is real world economy figures for these?
The heart says VR the brain 8v, could the 16v be a good compromise?

had a simialr thought process recently.
Nearly bought a VR6 golf but ended up with a urS4, again you get so much for the money these days!
Have you considered an Audi cope for the same sort of money, these are very cheap at the moment. a 16v or a five banger would make a decent £1k commuter capable of galactic miles as well.
They are all good cars for £1k, I think I would probably opt for one in good nick rather than being model specific if you are doing 16k/anum.

I've always liked the Audi Coupe, but just wonder about the performance v's the fuel consumption, I suspect the Golf would be better in that respect, although probably not the VR!Nearly bought a VR6 golf but ended up with a urS4, again you get so much for the money these days!

I think you're probably right with regards getting the best one of any engine given the miles I'll be doing, thanks for the sound advice.
Don't be put off by an 2.0l 8v in the MK3 Golf, I had a Vento with this engine and it was a great engine as long as it has had regular oil changes. I took mine to 145k and sold it to someone I knew who took it to 200k without problems.
May be not as fast as the 16v, but was a good alrounder with about 35mpg average.

I had a 2.8 coupe quattro for 3 years, did 15k a year in it and averaged 29mpg from it. Not as punchy as the VR6 but can lift its skirt. Like you i missed that car, very good all rounder. The 20v's are the ones to go for if you want noise/performance. The FWD 2.6/16v/20vs will give you 35mpg pretty happily. Guessing on the 16k/ anum your going to be doing a lot of steady/ motorway driving which always helps economy.

Was about to say if you can find a grandad's vento 2.0 8v it will get to 200k no worries.May be not as fast as the 16v, but was a good alrounder with about 35mpg average.
There is a lot going for the Vento, the boot makes it less popular, but therefore cheaper. The only 'hot' version was the VR6 so most have been treated well and used sensibly. (I think there may have been a GT, but that was European only?) Not sure.
The boot is very big, but only for lots of small things rather than big things.
Bear in mind all the panels are different from a Golf even though it looks very similar and also be prepared for people to think it is a passat, including VW dealers when I had mine!!!
You should get 30mpg from the 2.0l no worries. As before it is a great alround, comfortable easy to drive reasonably pokey and fuel economic.
Bit of a jack of all trades master of none which is a good thing in a car.
I would avoid the tdi unless you enjoy going very slowly!
Mine was a 2.0 GL which had all the basic things you need, but wasnt exactly luxury spec, but had electric sunroof/windows etc. Just make sure the sunroof works if you get one.

I just have his real adiction to the VAG range, not really sure what or why and to be honest it's a pain in the ass, I wish I could get over it. I'd really like to get a Puma 1.7 as I've driven a couple before and was very impressed, but it's not the slightly camp image putting me off it's the fact it's not a VW!

Used to get 30mpg on my VR6 Corrado in a mixture of driving.
32/34 on a normal motorway run.
Even got it up to 40mpg driving at about 55mph for an hour - just to see if it could be done!
I've had a Corrado VR6, it was undoubtedly my favorite car I've ever owned, but it was just a second car as I used to have a company demonstrator so it didn't matter if I was only getting teens in mpg. I just know me and I'd certainly never get more than 22/23 out the vr, plus I'd only get a shonky one and I plan to own another at some point but spend £5-6 ish on it and keep it for Sunday best. 32/34 on a normal motorway run.

I just need something moderately fun and reasonably quick.
