Hi
I am looking at a 2006 Audi a4 AVANTE 2.0 tdi auto - with the sport option and paddles.
I have seen lots of posts concerning gearboxes. the gearbox oil was changed at 56K by Audi.
Is this likely to fail given it wasn;t done at 40K, or does this version of gearbox not have the common problem?
Thanks in advance

I believe the earlier problems are sorted by 2006. Mine's been fine, though the paddles are gimmicky. I never use them TBH, the box in normal or sport does a damn fine job, unless I want to hold a gear when I accelerate hard out of a corner in the wet using the quattro hehe

Quatro or front wheels drive???

The front wheel drives are multi tronic and not very good, we see less failures in the later ones, they dont develop the judder for example as they already have 7 plates clutch packs. But ECU's still play up from time to time.

That fact the the oil was changed at 56k and not 40k, means if it ever goes wrong there will be no goodwill payment from Audi.

If you are buying it as an approved used car from an audi centre your 1 year used car warranty will not be effected and will cover any failure within that year.

Hi
Thanks, it is a private sale - front wheel drive.
I don't know if it is the 7 plate clutch, even audi crew didn't know. They did tell me the current owner had a software update done due to juddering at set off.
Apart from the worry and tons of issues I have seen ref the multitronic, the car is stunning in black, 18 " wheels, leather, FDSH, bluetooth, ipod, etc
My question is - do i take the gamble with 13 grand and then 2 months down the line have to pay for a new gearbox!

Thanks in advance

13K for a 2006 2.0 TDi yikes

ETA - you could buy an extended warranty. I did for mine for 2 years - about £1K (3.0 TDi Cab). A lot I know, but piece of mind, as it's with an Audi main dealer, so I don't have to pay for repairs & claim back.

I just have no faith in that gearbox at the best of times, so Technically I'd say run away as soon as you said multi tronic, but to be a bit more objective.

We already know it missed it first oil change, (so good will from Audi at any point is now, out).

We cant be sure if its got the later clutch packs or not, (although I would have thought it would have at that age, but we dont know)

We also know its already had a fault on pull away.

And thats before we take into acount the characteristics of that box even when its working perfectly, snesation of clutch slip, delayed in moving off from rest etc.

Do you really want an auto? or are you just considering this one because its there??

Unless Dr G comes back and says it books at £15k+ (so if you dont like it you could sell it on at a profit) I'd run away and keep running.

OK I will take your advice - you obviously know your stuff! out of interest, what would a software update do to the box to stop it juddering? does this sound like a blag from Audi?
I have another test drive booked with the guy on saturday. is there anything i can do to check it - floor it, run diags etc?
I have seen a nice 56 plate A4 avante manual at audi carlisle 43k on clock.
not many extras ,but think i can get it for about 14k with a 1 year warranty.
depends on how much you expect to get the forecourt price down i suppose - but it is up at £14950

thanks very much for your help TT

Hi Tame Technician
If I test drive the car and it shows non of the signs you mention and no lights on the display etc, is it likely to be ok or could it be that it is now at 62k, the trouble is likely to start any time now? Also, could i find out from my local audi dealer if it has had the 7 clutch gearbox from the vin number ?

Thanks again in advance

Posibly, sorry but I'm not sure. I would think the parts department would be your best bet, not sure how the service department would be able to tell even with the VIN.

Thats a bit like saying how longs a piece of string. Or is that WW2 unexploded bomb going to go off.

It might do 50,000 miles + and be absolutely fine, there is no way to know with these things, its just that being a multi tronic it is far more likely to go wrong than if it was tiptronic or manual.

I cant stand the things I dont even like having to drive them to MK for training, you cant get the dam things onto the roundabout fast enough, the prospect of owning one is beyond me why you would want to. But if you do, and its everything you want in a car, then buy it.

But I will say I told you so when it goes wrong.

I think I would be stupid to buy one after listening to your advice. Its very rare to be able to get this kind of info until it is too late!
Thanks again much appreciated
