I'm looking for a replacement for my 2001 X5, so today I test drove two Touaregs. The first car was the 2.5 TDI, I didn't really get on with that engine, so the next was the (£5K cheaper) 3.2 petrol.

I enjoyed the petrol one, it's a bit softer than the X5 but I can live with that.
How bad are these things on fuel in day to day running? I get around 25mpg with the diesel X5.
Are there any common faults or options I should look out for?

Cheers

Dr G

Touareg 3.2 is the R32 narrow angle V6 which can sometimes suffer a rattly timing chain with miles, particularly if serviced infrequently. Very occasional popped coilpacks (cheap).

Fuel economy, I have only driven one of these quite briefly but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the low 20s.

The autotrader page says 20.5mpg for mixed driving, but I don't know if this is realistic or not.

I'll try to have a look at a V10 as well, the book says 20mpg for them too!
