Hi All

(need some help)
i have just bought a 2000 w plate vw golf v5 107k miles.
ive had it into my local vw dealer for service and a couple of repairs (spending loads to get it back to its best)
The garage said i dont have to replace the timing chain ever but still not sure as ive been reading mixed reports online. some saying change it at 100k.
it has a full vw service history and 107k on the clock. do i have to change it and if so where can i get it done.
hope to hear from you all
cheers
Mike

I always thought that you only replaced the chain if and when it started rattling. That's the info I got before buying my old Corrado VR6.

Probably the same game as with a 'rado - if there's no noise and it's been serviced regularly don't worry about it.

The V5 is the same as the VR6 engine, just without the last cylinder.

The chain does not need to be replaced periodically, there is no need.

However there are some rare cases (usually the 3.2 R32 and TT) where the chain stretches just enough to confuse the camshaft sensor and put the warning light on, Then it needs to be replaced.

As above if it starts ratling it need replacing also, the older cars, with less suffisticated engine management wont put the warning light on when the chain stretches and the first you will know about it is some noise.

If you are going to change the chain always check and preferably replace regardless the chain guides.
