Dear all,

I wonder if you can help, my father-in-law is looking for a new (So he can make use of scrappage) Golf SE Auto - spec and engine aren't so important.

The easliest he has been told he can get one is 6 months - does anyone know of a dealer with a sooner delivery date/allocation of stock?

Thanks,

Thorny

Unfortunetely there are huge delays on the 1.4 TSI 122 engine (assuming thats the one he wants) at the moment due to the massive demand, so I think 6 months minimum wait us realistic. I think its a similar story with the bigger TSI and the TDIs. The only model available for immediate delivery would be the 80PS 1.4, but thats not available with an automatic gearbox. Your best bet will be to look arround for nearly new ex-demo models that might be suitable.

EDIT: Just realised your buying under scrappage so nearly-new wouldnt be an option.

Does it have to be a Golf or would he look at other cars? Mercedes A-Class might fit the bill quite well. Similar price to the Golf, latest model is reliable and well built, bigger interior, automatic option on all engines. Or perhaps the new Polo? Its just like a shrunken version of the Golf. DSG option on the 1.4 engine.

Polo has the same problems with delays unfortunately; a lot of dealers had sold their allocations even before the demonstrators arrived.

Thats true, but I don't think they are delayed quite as badly as 1.4 TSI 122 engined Golfs, which are impossible to get holf of. The situation with those particular Golfs is so bad that VW have a notice about it on there website.

Thanks so much for the advice, autobytel and buyacar seem to be quoting 10-12 weeks delvery time but I am sceptical to be honest...

They are pretty set on a golf, my local dealer reckons they have a diesel se in stock and can get petrol in 3 months so will spk to him again and see...

Will these shortages continue now the German scrappage scheme has finished? Over 2M cars were sold under the scheme and the market is widely forecast to collapse now it's ended.

They have been shortages of that engine from day 1, VW just can't make enough it seems.

Any bright ideas where to find one? The diesel is out as they are 2-3k more that the petrols and the mileage they do doesn't make sense financially... Other petrols may be an option but it has to be auto...
