2005 onward A6: 2.0tdi, 2.7tdi or 3.0tdi?
Discussion
Hi,
Tried searching but didn't find answers on this one, so I wonder if the masses can help? I'm currently tooling around in a leggy '99 S4, but despite its utter reliability and fun factor, the low-20s fuel consumption is doing my head in combined with around 20k miles per annum. For the first time ever, I'm strongly thinking of defecting to the dark side.
I'm rather taken with the A6, and have driven a brand spanking new 2.0tdi recently, which I liked aside from the fact that it's a four-pot. I can't afford a new one, but there's boatloads for sale from 2005 on that seem appealing. Trouble is, I don't know much about the differences (on paper, but more importantly in subjective reality) between the three engines in these cars.
Spec-wise, I'd be after something with full-colour DVD nav, climate, Quattro, S-line, manual gearbox. The 40+ mpg of the 2.0tdi is also appealing, but so is something with six cylinders. The heart says look for a 3.0tdi, the head says 2.0tdi. Both say manual box: I've had two troublesome big autos in the past - never again.
I'd be ever so interested to hear owners' experiences of these things: performance, real-world economy, wallet-bashing bad points peculiar to the model, that sort of thing.
Cheers,
--Chris

Both 2.7 and 3.0 as a quattro S-Line Manual are hideously rare - the autos in these cars are strong and pretty good. Plenty of owners on here to confirm this. Manual is alright to drive but the tip box better suits the character of the cars.
2.7 is alright performance wise but saves nothing on running costs (seriously, fuel economy is the same as a 3.0!)
3.0 goes very nicely indeed.
See if you can find a friendly dealer with a 3.0 tip demo?

There have been plenty of similar threads in this forum and the general concensus is that the 3.0TDi is the one to go for. Tip box can be put into semi-manual mode but you don't really need it. MPG is quite good and I am averaging over 40 mpg with this engine in my A8L.
I think Blueg33 has one for sale, he will be along soon anyway!!

To be honest, I'd be happy with anywhere over 40mpg in mixed driving - it's close to double my current mpg.
If that's achievable with the 3.0tdi, then that's happy news indeed.
Recently had a new 3.0tdi A6 Avant and am averaging 30-35mpg in my firt 1k miles. But currently that's only really been on short runs. I'd expect more on longer schleps...depending on how heavy one's right foot is obviously If that's achievable with the 3.0tdi, then that's happy news indeed.

I'm running an A6 Avant 2.7 TDi SE , 55 reg. Bought a year ago at 76k , now on 84k. Its got a few extars , valcona lthr , colour sat nav , int bluetooth phone etc etc.
I read the quattro hampers the MPG , I only use the car for SD&P , around town and short journeys it's down to 25mpg , will do 50-55 mpg at 55 -60 on the motorway if that's your thing. If we go away for the weekend and drive any great distance high 30's early 40's is the normal mpg.
It's a very quiet , refined drive . Not very exhilerating but certainly relaxing. Cost of ownership so far has been £0. It's on the longlife service schedule and it's looking like another 9000 miles or 9 months before it needs a service.
I've put it through an MOT recently , passed without any advisories.
I did read up on the remap possibilities , although they promise marginal gains on mpg and performance , I don't think I'll own it long enough to recoup the costs. Performance wise I'm more than happy , more often than not the dog is with us and he's not keen on the 0-60 sprint

3.0 tdi quattro was my choice. Average all trip mpg currently at 37 ish, todays motorway trip 120 miles on mway showed 42.7 mpg, the first 30 miles were windy country roads where mpg would have been down around 33.
Its a great car, tiptronic auto is fine so far at 54k miles.
I like it so much I will replace it with either another or an A8 if I am feeling rich.
There ae many threads discussing the relative merits of 2.7d over 3.0d Quattro. I have probably said the same thing on all of them. 2.7 not markedly better than 3.0 on fuel (so I am told) but doesnt have the performance advantages and the autos have the dreaded multitronic gearbox.
2.0d felt under powered to me when I tested one, but fuel economy is definately better. Understeer in the front drive versions is marked

We need a base for a track car, might be able to home that for you...
Interesting idea, although I should make it clear that it's going to be into the new year, probably March, before I'm able to move: some of the capital I'll need is tied up until then. And it's market-linked, so it could very well go pear-shaped anyway! If you're still looking for a track slag at that point, then we'll talk.
