Hey guys,

As a few of you may remember I was looking at buying an old shape A3, which I did. I got a very good price as it needed a bit of work (which £600 has sorted) and some body work. However, the main issue I am struggling to fix is the head unit.

It is a 2000 Audi A3 1.8 Sport and has a Concert headunit (tape player) with presumably a 6 CD changer in the boot. The head unit its self does not work or even turn on and the 6 CD changer in the boot is missing. The handbook also mentions (which seems to be the issue) it is Bose.

I took it to Halfrauds on Saturday looking to get a cheap head unit, but not only did they not have the necessary parts to fit anything, they were extremely reluctant to do the job on an A3 with concert / bose sound system. There are a few originals on Ebay I could buy or I could go to Audi if I fancied paying through the nose I reckon, but I would like a new looking cd player and the option of changing CD with out stopping and going in the boot.

Any ideas guys? Anyone know of anywhere I can go? I live in Hertfordshire.

Cheers thumbup

Take your pick of head units without daft Halfords pricing and pick up the Wiring adapter at the same time.

Job done.

Without a widget with your new cd player you subwoofter in the boot won't work unfortunately.

The gf's a3 has an aftermarket cd player which fitted straight in

You'll need a facia adaptor and beware there are 2 type's of adaptor one for the full bose with sub and one without. I have all the bits if you're ever in Kent they're yours FOC if you want to collect them.

Christ, it's hard not to love PH. Cheers guys. I may well do that VR6 thanks for the offer!

Ok with out sounding like a complete idiot, how do I know if it has a subwoofer or not? The manual doesn't say.

This was so much more complex than I anticipated!

  • edit* only problem being I can't seem to find a facia adaptor for a 2000 model frown

The facia adaptor is just two little bits of plastic that go either side of any aftermarket head unit.
If you have the sub it will be around/over the NSR wheel arch.

Yeah I have fitted a replacement headunit in my first car that required a facia adaptor. However I have only found one for A3 2003 onwards unfortunately, not 2000.

I think I found the sub, but it doesn't have Bose on it when I read it would and I think that makes a difference. I really want to do this, this weekend!

If your car has the Bose stereo it will have Bose logos on the speakers grilles.

Facia adapter is:

Top man, thanks for that. It's a bit odd. The Concert manual says the car is fitted with Bose sound system but I literally cannot find Bose written on even one place in the car. I've read that some head units can cause the Bose sub to stop working even with adaptor cables.
