Am currently looking for a cheap-to-run car, and quite fancy an 80 TDi. I'm well aware that they're slow, and not very exciting, but that they're built like tanks and will go on and on if cared for.
I've chanced upon one for sale local to me. It's a 94 saloon, with 190k on the clock, and "plenty of history". Last service (including cambelt) was done in 2008. It has a nearly new MOT, and is up for £700.
Bearing in mind it will need a service, and no doubt tyres, would anyone say that's a fair price?
Aside from the general signs of abuse, and rear calipers, anything else I should be looking for?

utterly bulletproof! I've chanced upon one for sale local to me. It's a 94 saloon, with 190k on the clock, and "plenty of history". Last service (including cambelt) was done in 2008. It has a nearly new MOT, and is up for £700.

the 1Z engine actually isnt that bad to be fair. All the 80s have a few weak links. Fuel lines for one, they run under the drives side of the car can drip/leak/corrode. Audi used poor steel originally replace with plastic easy! Front suspension is prone to rattles antiroll bar links/ top mounts can go fairly easy. rear calipers do stick on these if they have been left for any period.
They will return 50+mpg all day long. i know a few who run them on SVO without any problems.
Nearly new MOT and tax, recent cam change price sounds about right.
