So, I'm looking to offload my 530i Touring, and I've seen a couple of A6 Avant 2.8s that tickle the fancy.

What do I need to know? I know my BMWs, but nothing of the A6.

ETA - looking at cars around '98 or so.

Great cars. Not very exciting but still quite modern looking with a huge carrying capacity. My 1.9TDi avant has 180k on the clock and still drives very well. Suspension arms on the front are prone to wear but not that expensive to replace and make a big difference. This age of A6 are now great value in my opinion and I know of a few with almost 200k on the clock and no major issues.
In terms of the petrol models, we also have a 2.4 V6 in the family which is so smooth, quiet and refined. I've heard the 2.8 is just as nice, but quicker and not really any worse on fuel economy so probably the pick of the petrols.
Just be careful about clocked cars out there though as they hide the miles very easily. A mate put a deposit on one with 90k on the clock and said it drove like a 20k miles car. Turned out when he called Audi to ask about the service history, they hadn't seen it for 2 years at which point it had 165k on the clock!
Hope this helps and good luck.
