Do it.
Find a good one and you will be really happy.
Not great on fuel but what do you expect. Tyres and stuff not cheap also but again, you have to go into it with your eyes open.
As an everyday do everything car, I am chuffed to bits with mine. It sounds great, rides really well, handles amusingly for a big car, is very discreet and is quick enough to be interesting.
Gets lots of comments by everyone who goes in it and although I am serial car changer, I won't be getting rid of it any time soon. I love it.

Hi,
I've had a 57 s6 saloon since feb 2009 and its my daily drive. I've put 18k miles on mine since Feb.
I drive 70 miles a day up from hertfordshire to MK, I don't pootle along driving miss daisy but I dont cain it either.....I can easily get 24 mpg from it in the mornings.....
It is a very good descrete Q car......Mine has had a few issues and the tires (265/35/r19 xl conti's) are 250 a corner everywhere you go (even at the audi centre usually).....Mine has had an odd issue with an engine mangement light which the factory have now told the dealer to spend a day stripping it, which under warranty isnt an issue but when the warranty expires, I'l either got a decent third party warranty or try and extend the audi one.
It does do what is says on the tin, I've had mine down the Autobahn on that nice straight but near Aachan on the way back from the German grand prix this year at full tilt and boy does it come alive at around 110-120....
Some find the engine noise quite muted, milltek do a good exhaust....Not chav saxo loud but enough..
If you want to know more, feel free to PM me.......I'd buy another, although I got mine at a cracking price...
Theres one dealer (not audi) that hawks low priced s6's around, if its too cheap, it is for a reason....I'd buy if you can from an Audi dealer and have the fallback of having them or audi uk to shout at if anything goes wrong....

Might want to consider getting the 3.0T A6 with S-line pack.. When I got mine was looking at the RS4 and I looked briefly at the S6, however was getting into a much newer car with 3.0T. I think performance is quite similar.. Worth driving to find out...
Still waiting for ECU mods on the 3.0T, when these are launched, I suspect the performance will be right up there with an S6, maybe close to an RS6 in real world performance.. APS reckon around 400 BHP..however the torque will be immense..Well at the risk of getting into a p*ssing comp, we all know the perils of modified cars particularly when brand new.
A6 is a heavy heavy car and with 430 BHP the S6 brakes are enormous but it still slows down erm....slowly.
As much as we do talk about it, increasing BHP by that much would be a concern to an insurer (I know I work in the industry).
4WD on a S6 has the more 'sporty' set up with drive biased to the rear wheras it won't be on the A6t (I don't think).
Having said all this, if I were choosing between a newer A6t and an S6 it would be tough choice. Fuel, insurance, parts and depreciation are all issues with an S6 and of course an older car that could potentially be out of warranty.
Nice problem to have I think!!!!
As for me, the noise of the V10 seduced me!!
