I've recently bought my Grandad's 1991 MkII Golf (57K miles, he'd bought it new)

I currently have it insured on a regular policy for around £400 per year.
As it is garaged and a third car I would like to get it covered with a much cheaper classic car policy. Probably won't drive the car more than 500 miles a year.
Most classic insurers I've phoned have told me they would only consider insuring a MkI Golf and my car is too new.

Does anyone here insure their MkII in this way? Any companies to recommend?

Try Adrian Flux... they probably won't do it as a classic, but they do have "shadow policies" available for some cars - ie, you can insure a second/third car in your name, based on your non claims. You don't accumulate further bonus, but I found it cheap for my '97 Saab on limited mileage.

Also worth trying HIC (Herts insurance consultants) as they specialize in vw's. I was paying just over £400 on my standard Mk2 with a mainstream insurer. Fitted a 20v turbo engine plus a load of other mods, now insured with HIC for just over £400!

I had mine through AON a few years ago. Their min. age was 15 years old.

I think I paid about £120. Aged 42, 3k miles per annum, garaged, decent area.

Try Adrian FLux or Footman James. A good option is to look into joining a car club, as apart from other benefits, they often have 'relationships' with insurance companies. This also shows the insurance company that you see your car as a classic.
