VW Golf/Vento Issue...
Discussion
Ok Chaps... Going to need some help on this one.
I picked up this Vento ("What?!?!" I hear you say!) and it has been fine for the first 3,000kms, but now has a bit of an issue...
Since I have just moved to Sweden, I do not know where, let alone the best place to take a car for a spot of repair. But in the past, I have always taken a stab at it myself. Now I've hit a wall.
Basically, the Vento has the same 1.8 that they put in the mk3 Golf (this is guess work based on the Haynes manuals being 'as one'!). Happy to be corrected though.
Sometimes, I leave the house and she starts first time... but other times, such as today for example, I went to turn the key and she just keeps turning over. It's not particularly cold outside (about 7ºc today). Have checked the oil/water/petrol etc... All levels are perfect (If I do say so myself!).
The worrying part is the spot of smoke that seems to come from the engine bay. So, I open her up, try turning it over again and it seems to come from the top of the engine block (near the throttle cable).
Any ideas? Could it be a hose that has warn somehow/where? If I go outside right now and she turns over first time, should I be worried about driving her?
Cheers,
J

Hmm... Thanks for the help so far, guys!
I managed to get her started after a few tries, although it was very reluctant. I try not to make it turnover for too long at a time. Once running though, she is fine for a week or so, then the same issue happens again.
The other day, I got it started and after about 2 minutes running fine, she conked out and let out a similar puff of smoke... It's weird. I seem to also here a small pop from the muffler, although that could just be my dodgy hearing!
I've checked the engine earth cable and it looks fine, might replace it though just in case, thanks for the tip!
Any other ideas?
Cheers,
J

It's basically an 8v gti style motor I presume? If so, check CAREFULLY the wiring to the fuel injection rail that is close to where you say you see some smoke. There are two or three wires in a sheath, carfully cut it open to show the individual coloured wires, and see if there is any chaifing on the wires. It is not a common problem, but does happen, they all look ok from outside but are shorting out in the sheath, (about 6 inches from the wiring plug IIRC), and the effect is to stop the fuel pump working.
If you hear a "hummm" from the petrol tank on ignition switch on (not starting engine, just turn till dash lights come on) this is the fuel pump priming the injector rail. If you do not hear a him, there is no priming happeneing and the pump wont run, so neither will the car! !
A simple fix if you can find it, just tape up the chaifing. The wires just chaif on each other, not an outside agent.
A tip to find the problem as well is when it wont start, open the bonnet in the dark and try it, you may be lucky and see the sparks! This is how I found this fault on a Mk3, after changing LOADS of things! ! !!
BTW would always help to tell us the year and mileage of car, Ventos were around a fair long time IIRC.
