Fault codes on AUM resulting in misfire / hesitation 2-3krpm
Discussion
Hi guys, I'm getting the following codes on my AUM:
16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
16705 - Engine speed sensor (G28) implausable signal
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
16885 - Vehicle speed sensor - range / performance implausable signal
17579 - Angle sensor 2 for throttle actuator (G188) implausable signal
The symptoms it is producing are:
- Rev counter erratic between 2000-3000rpm
- Misfire / hesistation also between 2000-3000rpm
- Above problems seem to be worse when engine is up to temp
In the last few weeks the car has had:
- Genuine new MAF
- 4 x genuine new coilpacks
- Engine speed sensor / impluse sensor, the one near the oil filter housing
Is this related to the cam sensor / vvt stuff?
The car is returning good mpg and where it clears 3k rpm seems to drive and boost ok, its just getting rather annoying with the current problem.
Im getting to the point of wanting to take it to a specialist for some fault finding but dont fancy the prospect of the big bill its likely to bring.
Any ideas?

Cam timing is fine as far as I know but I havent checked, belt was done on schedule, car has done just under 30k since it was done
Cam timing issue would be prevalent over the whole rev range though wouldn't it?
I'm thinking its got to be sensor related, most likely cam sensor, but thats about £300 apparently.

Cam time a tooth or so, is undetectable in turms of performance loss, either low down or across the entire range, but it can confuse the sensors which leads the an engine management caused power loss, is what I was thinking of. BUT If the belt was done 30K ago, it wont be that, so dont worry.
Cam sensors are definatly not £300. Unless you mean fitted, ring a dealer get a price, or try euro car parts.
In my experience once the engine is running you can disconnect the cam sensor, and the engine will run on fine, it just wont restart again, so running faults are not usually down to cam sensors, but actually crank sensors. The car logs the cam sensor fault code because it cant make sence of it if the crank sensors it giving fault information, its also the crank sensor that feeds the ECU with the rev counter signal. Make sure there is no dirt or matal filings on the crank sensor and look for damage on its pickup on the flywheel.
If it was mine I would replace the crank sensor first but expect it may need cam sensor also failing that and with no evidence of damage to the pickup on thy flywheel, I'd be looking at ECU or wiring between the crank sensor and ECU.
These might not be the right ones, but look right to me.

Sorry just realised you changed that already. Missed it due to the vag term, engine speed sensor, when I say crank sensor.
Go for the cam sensor then, but be aware could be ECU or wiring between ECU and sensors.
I dont like the look if this code either, suggest 2nd separate fault with Throttle body problem also.

Do you have to take off / change the cambelt off in order to fit a new sensor or is it an easy swap over?
I understand it's quite visible by removing the belt cover, but have never done it, so dont know if its east or not.
Old thread resurrection alert I understand it's quite visible by removing the belt cover, but have never done it, so dont know if its east or not.

I occasionally get the 16395 camshaft timing error on my mk1 Seat Leon Cupra R, BAM engine code. It was appearing constantly, reappearing almost as soon as I'd cleared it around Christmas last year, occasionally with the opposite code 16396 about it being out in the other direction but after about two weeks it just stopped. It appeared again once in June this year and again on Saturday evening past there.
I cleared it both times and it hasn't shown since, but I'm thinking if it shows up again I might try changing the sensor you mention. Did you manage to do this and if so, any tips?
