Touareg gearbox problems

Hi, anyone having the same issue with the kickdown from 5th to 4th, noticed mine about a year ago, after warranty had run out, but it's getting much worse now. Contacted VW, who knew about this and published a memo on it but refuse to recall, and all they said was have it repaired and we might contribute?

When travelling along at speed in 5th gear and you gun it, when the gearbox kicks down there is an almighty bang and you lose power for a second.

What age and engine do you have?!!?? How many miles has it done.....

Apologies for that but Im guessing it has never happened in yours given when it does you think you've fallen onto a huge boulder.

Car is 3.0 tdi 55 plate with 95,000 on it but it first happened with about 70,000.

Take it to a gearbox specialist who can plug it in to a diagnostics machine for an initial diagnosis.

If the dealer are saying they might contribute to the repair I would go and talk to them properly about this... Sit down with them, find out how much it is going to cost to repair and how much they are willing to put on the table for you... get it in writing if you can...

Then go to an independand gearbox specialist with experience with the treg box and find out how much they will charge...

With both prices in hand, pay the cheapest for a repair..

Interesingly our T4 used to suffer with a "banging" auto box sometimes... fault turned out to be a temp sender....

VW (not dealer) were going to pay 50%, which turned out to be around £550 + vat, just dont see why I should pay this when it is an obvious fault they know about...

I'd say that VW are being reasonable if they are willing to contribute 50% to a gearbox that has seen 95,000 miles.

However, are VW going to replace the whole gearbox? An independent gearbox specialist may be able to replace just the necessary components much more cheaply.

I havea just bought a 2006 Touareg 3 litre TDI and within an hour of my first drive found a very similar problem at both low and high revs, eg around 10-20 mph accelerating and changing up gear, and overtaking at 60-70 mph. Terrible banging jolt which shakes the whole car. I have also found that in overtaking, the car occasionally loses all the gear contact and the engine goes into high revs for 3-5 seconds until it re-engages. Not very funny if you are trying to overtake another car. I have taken it back to the dealer to rectify the problem but would be interested to know if anyone has identified the cause? Or has a contact at VW I could talk to about this.

hi I have had my touareg for three years with this problem of banging on the way down from 5th to 4th gear I have now decided to get it fixed there is two ways to do it the garage will take the old one off and recon it for 700 plus vat then you need to remap the car at another exspence or they have got me a new one from vw suppled and fitted for £996 inc vat the garage is robs garage in Wallasey Wirral just google that and you will find them

Is it the gearbox valve chest that needed attention?
