Found a rather nice one of these in autotrader whilst looking for a diesel. What's thr thoughts on it?

My sister has the newest version of this and loves it.

This is the one - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

or there's a 140 version aswell...better choice for day to day economy? -

Thanks in advance.

I've ordered the black edition sportback - Nice motors, the 140 is easily tuneable to 170, and the 170 tunaeble to 190/200

buy on condition and what you can afford, personally i would go with the 170 and map it up if you can get the right motor.

I just dont think they are good value for money personally - however my only experience of the 170 engine was that its a bit gruff compared to the 140.

I drove both in the A4 and preffered the 140 from an economy perspective.

Cheers, it's the Black Edition sport back my sis has.

It's economy I'm looking for, but the 170 is really calling me.

TBH I like the wheels on the 170 and thes on the 140...

I really like the RS4 wheels, but you cant spec them anymore on the new BE, so you have to have the Rotor Arms, which are nice, just not great.

i'd be at least considering a cheaper or newer leon fr.

a3's are overpriced imo.

but to be honest the 170 engine has never really impressed me. too much lag!

My dad has a 170bhp non-quattro A4 Avant and used to have the previous gen model, which had the same engine as the A3 you linked.
Not a bad motor, it's torque was delivered in a huge slug so it felt quicker than it was.
He didn't find it massively economical, averaging around 40-43mpg ish. I would imagine the smaller A3 would be better, but the Quattro would probably rob just as much!

For economy, go for the FWD 140bhp. Do they do a 170bhp that's FWD?

I have the 170 tdi in a passat estate , it's a giggle most days . Economy is decent , I get 30 mpg if I hammer it in town , 40 if I drive sensible I can get near 45-50 at 90-100 mph mway .

Can get on with the Audi a3s , they just seem so overpriced , not sure they are worth it , actually scrap that ,They Are Certainly Not Worth It

First one is nice, I quite like the wheels actually and it also benefits from being an "Approved Used" Audi usually meaning you get a years Audi warranty, 1 years break down, service before you pick it up etc.

A3s aren't real Quattro, they're haldex so rears only kick in when fronts loose grip.

True, but it's a heavy system to carry around if you're interested in economy and regardless of whether it's active or not, surely it's more drivetrain loss that you don't need.

The non-s-line is quite close to me, so I might go and have a look and see what's what.

They seem heavily over valued. A BMW 320D is available in similar spec for similar money. To me that just seems a no brainer.

The 140hp lump seems to get better reviews, and most make well over 150hp standard. Remap them and you're looking 170hp with out much effort.

Seems an awful lot of cash for that you're getting.

With a nice remap though...
