Been looking for a new car for a couple of months and keep changing my mind between being really grown up and getting a wafter, or being my true self (a child) and getting something like a Chimaera to scare the balls off me.

My current fancy is an Audi S4 Estate for some reason. I've always liked the look of the early/mid 2000's model (looking at a 53 plate at the mo) and they seem to cover all my bases - big enough to carry a couple of kids around should I need to (don't know why I would need to, I haven't got any, but you never know..), quick enough for my tonsils to tickle the back of my throat when I floor it, nice V8 sound, 'german build quality', bucket loads of imagine etc etc, the list goes on.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these noble steeds? My budget is around £9k so I'm looking at a fairly leggy one (around 90k miles), but i don't really know what I'm looking for when I test one out, so any advice would me mucho appreciated!

I have a 04 s4 and the from experience the only real problems are

Check aux rads for leakage - if yours has done 90k may of had them changed already.

Cam chain on startup - rattle should go after a second, if a lot longer beware - not using the long life oil cured this..

Starter motor - slight delay on startup, means its on the way out, mine did this intermittanly for about 6 months before it was game over.

None of these are silly money to fix so dont be to worried - only thing that you will notice is petrol..14mpg in town and max 23mpg on motorway for manual! Auto will go up to 30mpg on motorway as longer 6th gear. But apart from that awesome car for the money...stupidly quick and transports the wife and kids.

Spend a little more if you can; that's really scraping the bottom of the barrel money wise but be careful and you should get something decent.

Budget for a Milltek too wink

I'd love to be able to up the budget a little, but it's a case of needing to sort a car out by the end of December as my current put-me-on runs out of MOT and it won't go through another!!

Was going to look at the Milltek's too, do they really make that much of a difference to the standards?

I was going to buy an S4, until I drove a B7 remaped A4 Quattro 2.0T. You get a more recent model, lower mileage and 30+ mpg for your 10k...

But no V8, chalk and cheese!

They're too muted as standard for me; still a lovely car but with a bit more noise the smile factor increases immeasurably.
