VW Golf mk4 1.6 S - starting problems
Discussion
Hi guys,
Just after some advice on how to start diagnosing a problem i'm having with the other half's car.
Every so often on start-up (problem is happening more often) the engine just doesn't want to catch no matter how long you crank it for. It used to be that a little bit of throttle solved the problem and it would catch fine, but that is getting harder to do now.
When it does catch sometimes it sounds like it's "fluttering", at very low revs and you can't rev the engine and it dies quickly.
A garage has suggested cleaning the throttle body, but for £50, i'm wondering if there's any checks I can do myself to narrow it down a bit further?
Without the problem happening every time it starts, (or it completely failing to start) I'm a bit wary of a spiralling garage cost to try and diagnose the problem.
Thanks in advance,

Coilpacks, sounds to me like it could be a coilpack (or two) which is kaput. Get it connected up to VAGCOM and scanned.
Otherwise, if it is the throttle body, clean it yourself, use carb cleaber spray or equivalent and a clean lint-free cloth. Not a £50 job imo, but then again imo it's not the throttle body that is the issue from what you describe.

I'd tend to agree on the throttle body - it was suggested to my other half by the garage, who did say "it might not fix it". To them, it probably constitutes an easy £50 which improves the running on lots of cars, but wouldn't necessarily solve this problem.
I forgot to say (Crucially!) that we had the codes read and nothing came up on it. Well the broken heated wing mirror did, but I don't think that's causing this issue!

i would try temp sender
Have replaced temp sender (and the 2 litres of coolant i lost during the process) and it has started first time, every time since. There is a possible problem with the starter motor solenoid, but i can investigate that separately!
Thanks marty
