Hi, Im selling my BMW in a couple of months and looking to buy a nice Rallye, I have a motorbike for the daily commute so it will be used solely for weekend driving and when the weather draws in again in the winter, although my bmw (e36 328i sport with ASC) coped brilliantly in the snow and ice, I fancy something AWD, a bit rare and always loved Rallyes. Had a couple of Mk2s years ago but Im no expert on them and was hoping there may be some knowledgable folk here to give me some tips and advice on finding a nice one. Budget is about £6000, although I havent ruled out buying one in need of saving and doing everything at once for peace of mind.
I know of the notorious rotting sills and getting the supercharger rebuilt which will be done immediately, so your help and experience much appreciated. I know there are a few owners knocking about here!
And NO, it wont be getting a 20v engine conversion! It will be staying pretty original.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long winded post!

I owned one about 3 years ago, and a friend of mine still has his, although it's now far from standard.

You've mentioned the sills & super charger rebuild, I'd also check out the 4wd system is working, my friends had something disconnected and was fwd as a result.

Panels are expensive should they need replacing, upwards of £150 each last time I looked, and thats when they're available.

Any transmission problems will be costly and possibly had to source parts to, check for a clunking when putting it in reverse and moving back a little. If it does this it's the 4wd disengaging and means that an oil chance would be nice on the rear (or both for peace of mind) diffs. Also a 'notchyness' when going from first to second, I'm quite sure that gearbox is prone to the synchromesh going. The tyres should have the same rolling radius all around the car, this can put big stresses on the drivetrain otherwise as my friend found out in Germany when his rear diff went.

Rallye's should have a bonded screen, if it's not it's been replaced. & green tinted glass sides & rear.

They should also have half leather seats with a grey trim with red lines and should say RALLYE on them. Door cards should be full leather. Electric seats were an option and came with deeper bolsters (much more comfortable in my opinion) Electric windows were an option, as were electric wing mirrors. Will most probably have a sunroof (unlikely you'll find a motor sport shell) and it should slide but not tilt. If it does tilt it's been retro fitted from another type of mk2 golf, check the fitting.

There is more but I can't think of it right now so I'll leave you links to a few flickR sets with plenty of Rallye pictures to keep you going with the impending purchase.

Enjoy it, I loved mine, it felt very special and drove fantastically.

Cheers mate, seen pics of your old one before, looks great, and so does your mates. Have seen pics and videos of the Rallye meet before, wonder if it still happens?

It dies indeed, although numbers of Rallye's present over the last 3 years has fallen year on year it still takes place every year. I can't remember the date now but if you head over to www.dubforce.net it's a very good forum for all G60 information and kind of the unofficial home to the Rallye Golf.

Regards,

Matt.

Cheers Matt. Im already familiar with the Rallye Golf Register on Volksforum, where a fellow from holland I believe has attempted to register information on all existing Rallyes around the world. Hoping to come across one for sale there but nothing yet.

If you've got a BIG budget... http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2355867.htm

Edition 38 is also worth checking out, it's big for the VW scene and a huge classifieds section.

That one is double my budget, saw it as soon as it went up a couple of weeks ago. I check the classifieds on here regularly, but some of these cars seem to pass between friends or certain groups rather than go up on websites. Missed out on a lovely black one for £6k recently on here.

Just joined ed38 cheers for the heads up anyway.
