Hi, I'm new on here, I've had a look at some of the posts and there seems to be a lot of experts out there, so I'm hoping someone can help.......

My dad has an Audi A6 2.5tdi V6 estate (X Reg) Its got the box which can be used as a standard auto or when you slide the lever it can be a semi auto. So far he's had 3 years of trouble free motoring and the car still looks like new and runs beautifully. A while ago it started jumping gears once in a blue moon, then one day after coming to the bottom of a hill it felt like it was stuck in top gear and it refused to climb the next hill, reverse was OK but nothing forward. The AA were called and they diagnosed the ECU to be soaking wet due to a leak. After the ECU had been dried out with a hairdryer, the car ran fine for a few days. After being parked the car again refused to drive, forward or reverse. It was transported to a so called "Audi Specialist" who instantly said we need a new ECU £960 and the leak sorting so it wont happen again. They also stated the box could be damaged as a result of the failed ECU and until the new ECU is fitted they cant guarantee it will cure the car. Furthermore they said the ECU has to be programmed and is non returnable once programmed.

Yes you guessed it. £960 and they said the box is screwed!!!! Not giving them the satisfaction we transported the car to the Audi dealers for diagnostics. They confirmed a Brand new ECU had been fitted and it was correct for the car, they also said it had not been programmed by the previous garage. They hooked it up and programmed it while I waited. Still no drive!!! The dealers said the gearbox is shot, they advised getting a secondhand Box and ECU fitted from somewhere cheaper. Apparently new ECU's can only be programmed once????? On this model there is no gear oil change???? I dont trust dealers!!

Someone on a fourum suggested flushing the oil by disconnecting a cooler pipe from the rad while pumping new oil into the dipstick, has anyone heard of this? Better still if theres a fix out there I'd love to know, it would make my old dad really happy to have his A6 back. So far including the ECU and transporters the bill is around £1300

Changing the oil might be worth a go if you can get it done cheaply but if the box is playing up that badly the horse has already bolted.

I'd phone around some transmission people for quotes to rebuild it if the rest of the car is sound.
