Hi all, just had our Golf V5 2001 in for it's 100k service - engine light is on and diagnostic is a stretched timing chain. Not the best news as we know its one of the most involved jobs to have done!

Anyways - the car is pristine in every other way and we are looking for some quotes for the work doing. Not sure if it will be the top tensioner which has gone in which case it could be a more straighforward task or if it requires both top and bottom chains doing.

We have had some quite alarming quotes thus far and I just wondered if anyone else has any experience with these or can recommend a technician who does out of hours work perhaps or a decent specialist? We are in Leeds but within Yorkshire would be fine.

Hope someone can help!

Cheers

Marc

Can't really help with the problem but... My daily V5 is coming up to the 100k mark!! Hope it doesnt happen to mine! Has been ultra reliable since 65k miles only needing new coilpacks.

I would try searching / asking on www.uk-mkivs.net Most stuff has been covered at some point on there.

Hi Jez, yeah I'm a forum member on there and the gti forum - have posted there too - try to get as big audience as possible. Apparently they are not renowned for going but the tnesioners have a plastic coating which wears down - when this happens the tension is slack and the chain "stretches". To be fair our car runs sweet and sounds very smooth - no rattling or slapping - the only thing was a slightly lumpy idle which has been cured by a sprak plug change.

Annoying thing is I bought the car unde false pretenses from a trader - my fault really as I should have invested in a code reader before purchase - my first Golf though so live & learn!

How is yours through the rev band out of interest? I have a slight flat spot between 3k and 4k aside from that is smooth.

Ah right, well let us know how you get on, be good to know for future reference. They do suffer from mildly lumpy idles due to the nature of the 5 cylinder design i was told once. Mine seems to be okay in general although cold starting is sometimes a bit iffy and you have to give it a rev to help it 'catch'... this is to do with a known problem sensor apparently.

I don't have the flatspot, no. I changed the spark plugs about 2 years ago for mildly better ones and also fitted an aftermarket filter in the standard airbox. I did put it on the Surrey rolling road actually and it made 180bhp and 175 ft/lbs torque which is a little up on the manufacturers specs smile

Do you have any receipts for new coilpacks in with the service history? When they start to break down (which they will!) it does lead to rough running and eventually misfiring.

Hi Jez, thats not a bad result from the rolling road! Happy days! No there were no receipts unfortunately - it had a f s/h stamped (but that can be worthless in some cases) so i decided to start my own s/h - the coil packs have been checked along with all sensors - maf, o2, lambda, cam and actuators. It's defo a stretched chain - to be fair I have just got a quote for the work from a local specialist @ £400 plus parts which are about £180 (unless i do the clutch at the same which might be worth it if the box is out) so not too bad considering once done it should be good for another 100k

My v5 170 also has a flat spot at about 3-4k rpm. Less noticeable on V-Power, but most owners on seatcupra.net also report a flat spot. Good luck with fixing your chain in any case.

Timing Chain update - depsite the V5 having no running issues other than a slight flat spot and a slightly lumpy idle I have decided to have the timing chains, tensioners and guides replaced, just have a nagging thought at back of mind that if it went bang it would be pretty costly!

Anyways I ahve managed to source a local garage which is owned and run by ex-RAC technicians who have also had much experience with VAG and BMW. They instill a lot of confidence and their premises is more akin to an operating theatre than a workshop!

They have quoted me £580 including vat for the labour and parts - After getting quotes from several VAG specialists in the reqion of £1200 - £1500 I think (hope) I have got a good deal here. Looking forward to Friday when it should be ready!

If anyone is interested the Garage is based in Leeds - and web is - http://www.moorfieldgarage.com/

Update - ok the timing chains and ancilliaries have been changed, also had to change the clutch, dual mass fly wheel (which had almost an inch of play in it!) and release bearing - parts must be genuine so that was a further £670. Anyways we looked at both the new and old chains and there was some play in the old chains when laid out next to the new ones and the tensioners were a bit worn. However it wasnt dramatic wear the tech said - we replaced anyway for completness sake, problem is the engine management light remains on with the same fault code!! 17755 incorrect correlation between bank 2 and crank!? The tech said that the issue is the electronics like to work within set parameters and even if they are slightly out they will throw up fault codes.

Have decided that the light on the dash will get sorted but for now I'm just going to run it and enjoy it with strong piece of mind that the engine is now pretty much bombproof

After all the work and servicing (new platinum plugs) the car is totally transformed and drives like it should have done - the clutch kit makes a huge difference in itself - acceleration is liner and strong right through the range all flatspots gone. The V5 really does howl - reminds me of my Focus ST albeit without the turbo whoosh!

Moral of the story - the fault codes are not always the best indicator and it really is trial and error sometimes!

Good to hear it is running 100% again and i am glad to hear that the parts that came off were not too worn. Gives me confidence in mineas it is around the same mileage (93k now) smile

Regarding the error code, have you tried clearing it with the error code reader (if you have one)?

Hi Jez, Yeah it was good that they hadn't totally gone - although I did think was it work which didn't really need doing after that. Anyways it has contributed to the cars running so all good.

I have a code reader and the tech cancelled the code too but it came back - so there is still a fault there but now it is underlying and not an issue really - I am happier knowing that the big stuff is now done anyways - now all I have to sort a few interior niggles (remove radio to check connections) Not sure if its the base antenna unit or just not connected properly but I don't have the keys to remove the head unit so will have to think of something!
