Just had an odd fault start last Friday with the Golf. It's a 2.0TDI and has the ABS warning light has lit up on the dash together with the ESP. Sequence of events is as follows;

Driving on motorway, go above approx 60mph.

ABS and ESP instantly light up, you cannot turn the ESP on or off with the button.

Park, turn ignition off and back on - ESP is back to normal and can be turned on and off with button, ABS light gone (if not instantly then within 100m driving)

Back on motorway, complete same journey keeping under 50mph - no lights come on.

Drive same journey going over 60mph - lights back on again as soon as 60 is hit.

I've done the test a few times and it only lights up at bang on 60mph. I'm hoping this is just a wheel sensor and not the entire dreaded ABS pump failure that gets a £1200-1500 bill. Has anyone else had this happen? VW aren't available until Thursday for an appointment and I wanted to do some homework on the issue.

Could a wheel speed sensor issue, A quick fault code scan with VAGCOM/VCDS would point you in the right direction.

I'm pretty sure it's not the dreaded ABS pump issue but just to let you know for reference VW now do a repair kit for a modest £400 compared to the £1,200 to replace the pump

Thanks for the heads up. How jolly decent of them! So they release a cheaper (but still bloomin expensive) fix kit but don't admit theres a problem? My two pals that have Golfs have had the ABS fault, both out of warranty. The GTI got fixed ono goodwill as it was just out of warranty by a few months, the other GT was full whack and only a year out. IMO this is not a servicable item - I don't expect it to need attention as a wear and tear item, it should be in there for the lifespan of the car. There seems to be ALOT of people on the forums that have had this fault.

Sadly, it seems to be so common on the MK5's. You're right though. This is an item which should last the life of the car without need for replacement.

Do you mean the same repair kit as detailed here?

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/190784-how-to-rep...

It's actually priced at £129+vat - although if you don't have access to VCDS then you'll have to pay a dealer to fit it.
I've just had exactly the issue on a Mk2 Octy vRS - two weeks before I was supposed to be trading it in for my new one!!

Seems so many of these are failing there can be a delay getting the kit from VW.

Following on from this....

I have an Audi S3 and my ABS light has also been on! (for a little while now) I had a fault code print out and there was nothing directly related to a sensor failure- just 'Control Module Error' with the ABS unit.

My mechanic advised me to source a replacement pump and module rather than pay £1200+ for a new unit plus fiting. I was just interested in finding out how long it takes to fit the whole unit approx? And if any of you guys have had any problems with replacing yours? It's not the sort of thing you ring around garages for on a regular basis, and as its a very important part any information would be great.

It maybe the same fault.
The diagnositc read-out on my car is:

Brake Pressure sensor 1 - G201
Electric malfunction in circuit
static

I was originally quoted £719+vat and fitting for a new ABS Control unit - however hopefully the fix kit will fix for a lot less.

i have the same problem from turning a sharp corner my esp light came on and doesn't disappear . i installed a 2nd hand pump and coded it however the g201 fault is still there. i swapped it back to my old one and now i have a abs and esp light.
did your kid repair the fault? and how did u bleed the brakes as mine are dropping to the bottom still after bleeding the pump and manually doing each wheel.
