Is there a relatively easy mod to upgrade the brakes on my 2003 A6 Avant 1.9tdi? Can I use the bits from one of the bigger engined models (as I've done on beemers in the past)?

Would be looking at upgrading pads anyway.

It depends on what you are starting from as to the best option. If your current discs are 288 or 312 mm then you have the FN-3 caliper. If you have the 288mm then you can switch to 312mm without changing the caliper.

Upgrading to the FNR-G60 or HP2 caliper would allow for 321mm discs. If you already have the FNR-G60 then upgrading to the two pot HP2 calipers and disks from a 4.2 will give you the same size discs but with a dual piston caliper.

I don't think you will get the Brembo 8 pots from the S6/RS6 without some other mods (certainly bigger wheels).

I think there is also a Porsche Brembo upgrade option but suspect that will cost a bit and is probably overkill for 1.9Tdi

At the rears if you have a solid disc of 245mm then you will need to change the caliper to a C43, this can accomodate either 255mm solid or 269mm ventliated disc.

The easiest way to check what calipers you have currently is to look at the white sticker in the spare wheel bay. Look for the following codes:

Fronts
1LB, 1LE - FN-3 Caliper 288mm discs.
1LT, 1LF - FN-3 Caliper 312mm discs.
1LA, 1LG - FNR-G60 Caliper 321mm discs.
1LX, T7Z - HP2 Caliper 321mm discs.

Rears

1KD - C38 Caliper 245 Solid discs
1KE - C43 Caliper 255 Solid discs or 269mm ventilated discs.
1KZ = C43 Caliper 355mm ventilated discs

I had Porsche-Turbo front-brkes fitted on my A6 2.7T quattro, no probs after that, but rather expensive :-((
