Reading through this months Sprint i found an ad by Tvr Power ,says they are offering a replacement Ecu package .
A complete drive in drive out replacement of Ecu distributor and air mass meter , doing away with the stepper motor and ignition amp too .
All in for 2.5k plus vat for Ecu new loom and bespoke engine map. Its a lot of money but i suppose it gets rid of a lot of potential probs
with the old set up ,Must start saving up or doing a bit more round the house for swmbo hehe Be interested in hearing from anyone thinking
about or actually getting this done.

Thanks for that Derek will have a good look at it tommorrow have already read the tuscan article earlier today, very informative it seems to make a big difference to what i thought was an already modern system . I have read quite a bit about these new management systems amd these emerald and megasquirt
ecu,s seem to be a lot cheaper than the Power Mbe set up . I have a 93 pre sep 500 and while touch wood its running well i would be interested in upgrading
in the near future ,This drive in drive out system from power seems a little steep but if its as good as some of there other stuff i hear and read about it may well be worth it . Regards Tom.

I think it is great that Power are offering this upgrade as a package ditch the dizzy and upgrade to a fully mapped iginition system. I am not convinced that the MBE unit is the best choice however, I know a number of the Tuscan boys are desperate to get rid of thier MBE ECUs.

I am sure that Power could offer this package with a different ECU if asked.

The different systems are horses for courses. If you don't mind, or would rather enjoy, fiddling with things yourself then you can do so at a reasonable price. If you are a little wary then you can choose an off-the-shelf one.

I knew nothing about the ECU (apart from the fact that the 40-pin plug caused my misfire) but in collating the ECU articles I have to say I've become more than a little intrigued. The latest Megasquirt first of all put me off a bit but the more times I read it the more I wondered if I should put a heater in the garage for the winter. I had some plans but I am seriously considering changing them.

When you see the amount of work involved in setting up the ECU then the prices for fully functioning one seem fairly reasonable to me. It's all a question of which way you want to jump.

I like the idea of a dial where you can switch from one map to another. That's too cool for words. The bloke next door to me has two M3s. I'd love to be able to point to the switch and say: Know what that does?

All very exciting.

why not go for a system that you can map yourself, or add changes to if required, that way you dont need to go back to the place who installed it in the first place, Emerald is an excellent package, and many tvr indies have been offering this and other ecu packages for a while now.

With respect clive we cant all be as talented as yourself with the spanners, welder ,etc etc . indeed if i was to attempt something like an Ecu change beleive me it would end in tears. It took me 2 1/2 hrs just to put a k&n filter and smooth induction kit on and i couldnt function properly for a week after
what with a bad back and hamstrings quivering like vanessa maes violin. The power ecu deal sounds very sorted as it probably is i like the idea of drive in drive out. Could someone please expand on the differences between Mbe ,Emerald and Megasquirt ecus in plain english . Regards Tom.

I think the point Clive was making was that if you go for something only Power and a couple of others sell and maintain, you are always forced to go to them for changes. Whereas if you go for something more widely supported then you can go to anybody.

The difference between MBE, Emerald Syvecs etc is who makes the product and what features it supports - eg sequential injection, knock monitoring etc.

Just incase you didn't know, V8D have been selling a plug-n-play replacement for the Lucas ECU for over a year now. It can be bought as fuel only (direct swap) or a wasted spark based setup thats 90% Plug-n-play. This is based on the MegaSquirt MS2 ECU.

Cost is around £700 to £1200 depending on the options you choose.

Hi, Mark.

Indeed.

I really don't know what to do. The articles that you and the others sent in have really inspired me. Unfortunately they appear to have left my wife cold. I've just got my first grandchild and the second in due in three weeks. They are costing me more than my own kids! I couldn't believe the cost of prams. I rather rashly promised to buy them for my kids.

It would now appear that I have to buy a car that is convenient for babies so funding for a new ECU is seriously compromised.

O/T: we looked at a Golf 1.3 and I was surprised to be told it costs just £30 road fund licence. When you factor in fuel savings I might find there is a bit of money over.

Cooler still when the switch looks exactly like a TVR fan switch but the illuminated surround glows green (for general trundling map), red (for power), and yellow (for fireworks). Guess who has one wink

Don't the Pre-Serps need a Dizzy to run the Oil pump?
How would these kits get around that, or have I not read enough and/or remembered wrong about Pre-Serps?

Derek,

What put you off about the latest Megasquirt offering?

I'm only interested as I was about to order one from Phil at Extra EFI.

That is a great idea if you have a pre-serp and want to ditch the dizzy.

The machined shaft is a neat idea, but you can retain the entire distributor mechanism, lock it up, and still have a fully mapped ignition system - mine is. No worries about fitting a trigger wheel then.

Phil,

Nothing. In fact I'm considering it seriously and it is my favourite at the moment.

That said, the reason I'm thinking of it is that I can fiddle with it. I've got a mate who would love sitting beside me fiddling with his laptop. At least i think that';s what he wants to fiddle with.

I'm a bit short of spare money at the moment unfortunately. I've just had to pay out a bit of a lump and I've failed to get a contract I was after so things are a bit tight. And my car's in for repairs! But then there's the winter coming up. Should have some cash to spare then.

Don't facy writing a bit for www.RV8R.co.uk do you when you do it?
