Clutch pedal - should it have a spring?

Now all the pedals etc are back in, and the clutch is fully bled, I've noticed there is about half to an inch of slack in the clutch pedal and there is no spring to pull the pedal back to its resting position.

There is a 'spare' hole in the pedal arm, and a bracket in a convenient place on the steering column, so should there be a spring to keep the pedal from leaning on the clutch master all the time?

I don't recall seeing a spring on my 500, but I did notice the play which you mentioned. I found that this could be reduced by loosening the locknut and adjusting the pushrod between the pedal and the clutch master cylinder.

Bob - thanks very much but for once there is no panic mate, I haven't even put the drivers seat back in yet so there is no rush

Incidentally guys, if you have your head down in the footwell looking at this try popping off the locking clevis pin which attaches the U on the end of the rod to the brake pedal and check it. Mine was very worn so I've had to renew it with a traditional clevis pin slightly modified.
For the sake of a 20p part it would be a shame for it to let go while you're out.

Can't say's I recall mine having a spring. Have seen a couple of different rod lengths though, depending on where the master cyl is sourced I assume.

Yes those clevis pins wear, as does the hole through the pedal and rod attachment. Ideal to get all components with no wear as this will take out any pedal slog caused by them.

Ian, I am sure you have not been awaiting response..But if you are still on your back in a footwell somewhere, I have checked mine and there are no springs anywhere to be seen. With the usual proviso that I have a later car, 500 and who the heck knows what the builder was thinking on that particular day in the factory.....
