Anyone know the resistance values of the temperature gauge sender unit at differing temperatures? (griff 500 1999 so the newer sender)
My gauge all of a sudden dropped by 10 degrees a few weeks ago and I’ve been looking into it since… I had it drop another 10 degrees today (down to 60) at normal cruising for a while but did appear to read right in traffic as it was getting up to 85 ish…
But I’ve removed the thermostat tonight and that is working fine. It should be as it’s only been in 12 months as I went for an 82 deg unit… (otherwise I was running cold)… it starts to open at 84 (in a pan) and is half open by 88.. and fully open by 95…. Then cooling, it’s half closed at 84 and closed at 79.. so on average, it appears to be working fine (although it does not open as wide as a 74 degrees unit I have?...
Anyway, the way the car runs confirms it was working fine as the fans came on at 80.. where as normally, they come on at 90.. so as I say, a 10 degrees drop…
I cleaned the connection on the sender and removed the dash and did the same on the gauge.. but no change.
Must say, having removed the thermostat housing you can easily get to the sender and the spade on the thing was very loose.. so may be this is the issue….
So if I can do the same and put it in a pan of hot water and check the resistance I can confirm if it’s working right or not… have checked the SH manual but there is nothing for this sender.. just ECU senders….
So if anyone out there knows the values, It would be appreciated… many thanks!

Sorry cant help with the figures but was just wondering how you found the 74 degree stat. From what you said am i right in thinking that you found the car ran too cold. Just curious as i am going to fit a new one.

Can't help with resistance values but I've changed two on my Griff in 11 years. Not difficult to change but fiddly unless you take out the distributor!!
TVR Car Parts keep them in stock and will mail to you - job done!

Yes.. I changed to 82 as the car was running cold.. I've got a 3 row rad and on the motorway it would read 65 deg at times.. this means it would be getting a bit of enrichment so not right...
Fitted 82 and all it does is keep the temp up.. obviously the fans come in at the same point etc... No problem.
.
With regards to the switch.. yes I have it out... no problem if you remove the thermostat housing.. you don't need to touch the dizzy... If no one know's I'll get one ordered tomorrow.... how much are they.. any idea... and how much is post!.. on these small bit's I've known post to be more than the bit!!
I'll need to go the the Land-Rover shop tomorrow to get a new termostat housings gasket any way... don't suppose it's a Landy sender is it?
.
Cheers....

If memory serves the ECU temperature sender and gauge sender have identical resistance properties.

I tried that, but it didn't appear to tie up?... but may be thats because its shot??
Re-looked in the bible tonight and still can't see it... it refers to the ECU one and connecting to the two pins... obviously this one only goes between spade and earth....
Are you sure they are the same?
will try again tomorrow... but by then the new one will be here.. so will try that too.. cheers...

Yes. They are definitely the same. I use an ECU sender in place of the standard TVR gauge sender because it works better and makes a bit of extra room for a modified piece of cooling system.

Now thats a good idea... and then you'd have two to go at to drive the ECU... Interesting... I assume one pin just goes to earth!... May have a go at this biggrin
